Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S3E2 "AKA You're Welcome"

Go To

Tensions run high between Jessica and Trish as Trish hones her new catlike skills and scours the city for a chance to be a hero.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: The episode focuses entirely on Trish, down to being narrated by her rather than Jessica. One neat effect is that the show's usual music doesn't appear until Jessica does.
  • Amicable Exes: This episode confirms that Jessica and Oscar aren't an item anymore. In fact, Oscar informs her that he found a new girlfriend.
  • Attempted Rape: Trish saves a girl from being raped by a repeat offender.
  • Cain and Abel: Andrew Brandt has his half-sister brutally beaten up by a bunch of thugs for the statue she inherited.
  • Combat Parkour: Trish uses ordinary playground equipment to hone her skills. When she finally accomplishes a run-up-the-wall back flip, she is excited and looks around like, "Did you see that?"
  • Didn't Think This Through: Trish, a celebrity, apparently thought that going crime-fighting without a disguise would not result in her being recognized. She was wrong.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Trish is pretty shocked when she hears how Malcolm blackmailed the mugger for a lower settlement by threatening to tell his son that he isn't his biological father. She instructs him never to do anything like that on her behalf again.
  • Foreshadowing: Trish tries to use her powers. A perfectly good phone gets broken.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Trish is incredibly jealous over Jessica's fame.
  • Heroic Wannabe: Trish, who is way too eager to jump into action after discovering her powers. The mugger she stops promptly sues her for assault.
  • Hidden Depths: Dorothy, for all her snobbishness, still knows how to clean.
  • How We Got Here: Except for the very last scenes, the entire episode catches us up on what Trish has been up to leading up to her encounter with Jessica last episode.
  • Jumped at the Call: Deconstructed. Trish's overeagerness does way more harm than good.
  • Love at First Punch: Trish and her trainer go from sparring to having sex on the floor. Though she makes it clear it's just a one-night stand.
Adrian: Sleep with a client, lose a client.
  • Mythology Gag: While trying outfits she might use as a costumed vigilante, Trish tries on a bright yellow unitard with a black sash and a domino mask... in other words, her costume from the comics.
    • She also dresses in a Ms. Marvel-like leather suit, complete with wig, in reference to how Carol Danvers was the one who served as Jessica's friend in the comics.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome:
    • This episode reveals that immediately after Trish's discovery of her powers in the S2 finale, she tried to repeat the trick only to drop and badly crack her phone.
    • Trish patrols the streets looking for a crime to stop and hears about a robbery on her police scanner. She runs to the location to stop it, only to find that the police have already arrived and handled it.
  • Once More, with Clarity: We see the reason why Trish went after Andrew Brandt, the guy with the statue, from the last episode. We also learn the origin of the bloody chains in her apartment.
  • Secret Identity: Trish starts hiding her face after it turns out she's too well-known to be effective as a vigilante.
  • Take That!: Much like how Luke Cage (2016) did with his comics accurate costume and Jessica did with the costume Trish suggested in the first season, Trish expresses disgust at a costume that is a spot-on replica of her costume from the comics when trying several potential superhero outfits.
  • Title Drop: Several times by Trish. The first time she delivers the titular line, she’s tentative but excited at having stopped her first crime. The second time, she's fiercely proud at having prevented a rape and empowered a young woman to become the hero of her own story. The third time, she’s bitterly resentful at having been used as a means to an end by Jessica.
  • Training Montage: Trish has one, discovering her powers.
