Jane the Goodbye

"And I'm so excited about our wedding, but I'm most excited about our future together. Because it's not like the telenovelas I grew up watching. The wedding isn't the end. Our story is just beginning."
Jane

In the lead-up to her and Rafael's wedding, Jane is working on her novel's last edits. Xiomara and Rogelio announce to the family that they are moving to New York for This is Mars, but Xiomara is conflicted about leaving her family behind. Luisa has learned Rafael's parents — ordinary civilians — are dead, and breaks this news to Jane, who then informs Rafael.

Everyone gets through the wedding rehearsal in one piece. Jane is particularly inspired by the toasts at the rehearsal dinner and rushes to revise her novel one last time. On the wedding day itself, Rafael tries to get the new manuscript to the publisher's, but is arrested on his way out; Jane now has to go on one last wacky adventure to get him and the rest of her family to the wedding in time.

Finally, Jane and Rafael get married, surrounded by friends and their ever-growing family.

Tropes:

  • Aside Glance: Jane winks at the camera after saying that her book ends with its own telenovela adaptation.
  • Back for the Finale: Rogelio's parents, Lina and Danny, and JR all show up again.
  • Book Ends:
    • "Una Flor" played throughout the pilot as the theme song to Rogelio's show; now, it plays as Jane walks down the aisle.
    • Jane imagines an bus ad of Rogelio speaking to her as she did in the first episode.
  • Crowded-Cast Shot: The last pictures in the wedding Photo Montage consist of Jane and her family: her parents and grandparents, her new husband Rafael, their son Mateo, Rafael's sister Luisa, his ex-wife Petra and their daughters Ellie and Anna, Jane's half-sister Baby, Baby's mother Darci and her partner Esteban, and Petra's girlfriend JR.
  • Grand Finale: After five seasons, the main characters get their Happy Endings, and the show ends on the main character's wedding.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After yelling out the last part of the reading, Mateo tells his mother that Glamma told him he had a good voice for voiceover.
  • The Reveal: Adult Mateo is the narrator.
  • Who Would Want to Watch Us?: Jane ends her novel by having its events adapted into a telenovela. Rafael responds like this.
Rafael: What happens at the end of your book?
Jane: They make it into a telenovela.
Rafael: Well, who'd want to watch that?
  • Wedding Finale: Discussed as a standard telenovela ending, and indeed the show ends with Jane and Rafael's wedding.
