Recap / Jane The Virgin S 5 E 17 Chapter Ninety Eight

Go To

Rose: Ours is the greatest love story ever told.
Luisa: It might be. But it ends now.

Jane has been living in extreme anxiety since learning Rose is on the loose. Her publishing hits a snag when it turns out Michael hadn't signed off the life rights for his story to be featured in the novel. Rafael struggles to juggle his job with Petra at the Marbella with his real estate job, while Petra wonders if she should get back in touch with JR after learning that the latter's mother died. Both Xiomara and Darci are willing to move with Rogelio to New York for This is Mars, but Esteban is reluctant. Rogelio tries to convince his former rival to come with them by reminding him of his acting glory days.

Meanwhile, Rose makes one last play to get Luisa back.

Tropes:

  • All Part of the Show: Rose plummets to her death in the middle of Rogelio's presentation of This Is Mars, and then is set on fire. The audience assumes that it's a special effect.
  • Babies Ever After: This episode gives Michael's storyline closure; he is engaged to Charlie, another ranch owner, and they are expecting a baby.
  • Batman Gambit: Darci and Esteban convince Rogelio that Esteban has lost interest in acting, in order to trick Rogelio into offering Esteban a bigger role.
  • Cyanide Pill: Subverted. Luisa makes her muderous ex Rose think she's taking a cyanide pill, but it's actually a Tictac to distract her.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Luisa pushes Rose onto one of the sharp statues at the This is Mars premiere party, impaling and killing her. It also parallels Zaz's death in the first episode.
  • Older Than They Look: Rose (played by the then-late-thirties Bridget Regan) is fifty-one, to Jane's abject surprise. Michael reminds her that Rose is an expert at plastic surgery.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Done by Jane to Rose after Rose threatens to kill her family at her wedding.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: Rogelio's smug rival Esteban has apparently found a new calling as a humble spiritual guru, which hinders Rogelio's plan to move to New York. Rogelio eventually gets him to come back to acting by offering him the role as the villain on This is Mars. It turns out Esteban and Darci had planned this all along to get Esteban a big role, and he reverts back to "smug rival" characterization at the end.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Rose thinks she's the protagonist in a grandiose love story about her and Luisa's love. However, as the narrator has been reminding us since episode 1, this show is Jane's love story and Rose is the villain.
Rose: This isn't your love story, Jane.
