Jane the Daughter

Rafael: You know, that's actually not how it works, buddy. Just because you prayed doesn't mean Abuela won't get sick.
Mateo: So why do we pray then? I don't understand.
Rafael: Your mom always says that praying gives us strength to get through hard times. And this is one of those hard times. So, if praying makes you feel strong like a lion then you should keep doing it.

Jane's family attempts to cope with Xiomara's breast cancer diagnosis and help her come to a decision about what to do. Petra tries to move her relationship with Jane R. forward.

Tropes:

  • Comfort Food: Petra brings the Villanuevas borscht, which Rafael misinterprets as a romantic gesture.
  • Commonality Connection: Rafael and Xiomara bond over their experiences with cancer.
  • Cut Apart: The end of the Xiomara-and-Jane montage makes one think that Xo is going to talk to Jane, especially given their conflict earlier, but she's actually going to see Rogelio. It's Mateo and Rafael on the other side of Jane's door instead.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Petra claims that she's a very hands-on mom just before ushering the children into the tent and tossing them her iPad to keep them occupied.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Rafael believes that Petra is in love with Jane, but is quickly corrected.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Between Petra and Jane R.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Due to the broken One-Steve Limit. Petra works up the nerve to confess to Jane R., which Rafael overhears and interprets as her having feelings for Jane. He then confronts her about it, but the misunderstanding isn't really cleared up.
