Go To

While President Reyes shuts down the polls, Jack and the team breach the Presidential palace on a daring mission to rescue Greer.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Military: An American military helicopter trying to land on the roof of the Venezuelan Presidential palace would likely be shot down.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Jack, November and two of Matice's team enter the Presidential Palace to rescue Greer.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Between the Bonalde family on the USS Rafael Peralta, as Gloria and her children are reunited with Sergio.
  • Blatant Lies: The polls are closed early, with the "justification" that Reyes' lead is already so definitive that there's just no point counting any more votes. In fact, Gloria Bonalde wins by a landslide, and by the end is the new President.
  • Call-Back: Jack finds a Philadelphia phone number that was on Rupert Thorne's phone in the paperwork from Monica Herrera's office. This number leads Jack to realise that Senator Mitchell Chapin was The Man Behind the Man. The episode ends with him being arrested.
  • Call-Forward: On the USS Rafael Peralta, Greer complains about having to eat Navy rations again, while Jack says he's missed them. This signals that Greer is done with the rough living of field work, while Jack isn't.
  • Continuity Nod: Desperately trying to bargain with Jack not to have him arrested, Senator Chapin offers Jack political power, telling him that between Sulemain and now Reyes, he could be a Congressman very quickly with Chapin's guidance. This is a nod to Jack becoming President in the book series, and possible Foreshadowing.
  • Cruel Mercy: November talks Jack down from shooting Reyes by telling him that if Jack kills Reyes he'll become a martyr to American interference, whereas left alive he'll face justice from his own people. As the rioting citizens finally breech the palace gates, Reyes is shown in his office, clearly wishing he'd been able to goad Jack into firing.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Greer issues one to Jack when he tells him he's taking a desk job due to his heart condition, meaning more people like Jack are needed.
Greer: When you work behind a desk, your friends don't get killed. They don't get captured. They don't go down in helicopters. But it's the work, it's the real work, that still needs to get done. And if I can't do it, someone else has to. It's time...
  • Due to the Dead: Matice's body is taken away in a body bag for a proper burial.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Greer admits that his field career is over and he's going to be riding a desk from now on.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: November jokes that he'll be reassigned to Djibouti.
November: I'm gonna get so much shit for this. Probably get reassigned to Djibouti.
Jack: You'll like Djibouti. It's known for its beaches.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: Jack flatly refuses Senator Chapin's offer of political power in exchange for burying evidence of his wrongdoing.
    Chapin: What are you doing?
Jack: Respectfully declining your offer. [Leaves as FBI cars pull up]
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Jack takes photos and video of conditions in the prison camp and leaks it to the press, exposing Reyes for his crimes during election day. This leads to close the polls early and declare himself the victor, which causes the people of Caracas to riot and storm the Presidential Palace.
  • Sick Captive Scam: Greer escapes his prison cell by pulling one of these, lying on the floor and not responding to commands as if his heart condition has made him pass out. When the guard leans in to examine him, he clobbers the guy.
