Recap / Jack Ryan S 01 E 07 The Boy

Go To

Using Hanin's information, a daring mission is ordered to raid Sulemain's compound. But Jack's priorities may not match his bosses'. Jack's love life suffers as his investigations merges with Cathy's.

Tropes:

  • Cliffhanger: Jack and Greer realise that the hostages being rescued was Sulemain's plan all along, as they've been infected with Ebola, which due to his friendship with Dr. Nadler, has likely been passed onto the President.
  • Insistent Terminology: The CIA has officers, not agents.
  • Internal Reveal: Cathy is escorted to a meeting about the strain of Ebola she's been studying. She's answering questions about it when her casual boyfriend, who she understands to work for the State Department, walks in and is announced as working for the CIA. They remain calm and professional as they discuss the potential use of Ebola by Sulemain, but she tears into him outside.
  • It's Personal: When Dr. Nadler is identified as one of the captives. As Greer reveals to Jack, he served with the President in Viet Nam. This rushes the decision to approve the mission to rescue the captives. He also appears on the news hugging his old friend as he steps off the plane, which leads to the President possibly being infected with Ebola.
  • Mythology Gag: One scene shows terrorists smuggling... something dangerous implied to be Ebola but later revealed to be radioactive material through the port of Baltimore. In The Sum of All Fears, terrorists bring a nuclear bomb into the US through Baltimore.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • The agent who gives Sara and games consoles to keep them from getting bored accidentally enables Rama to innocently communicate with her brother, not realising why that's a bad idea. This in turn leads Sulemain to realise that Hanin is with the Americans and his fortress is compromised, causing him to bug out before the team can do their raid.
    • When it's revealed there are hostages at the compound, any discussion of simply bombing it is abandoned in favor of a special operations raid to rescue them. As the episode ends, it's revealed the hostages are likely infected with Ebola - and have just come in contact with the President....
  • Running Gag: Greer swears as Jack interrupts another meeting, this time to protest that Samir should be rescued, as per their agreement with Hanin.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Cathy finds out that Jack works for the CIA and not the State Department as he said. He protests that he had to lie about what he does and that everything he's said to her that wasn't work-related was true, but she asks how she's meant to believe that. He calls her later when she's had time to process, and she appears to have forgiven him.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Dr. Nadler gives some medicine to Al Radwan, his and the other doctors' previous captor. One of the others protests, but Nadler holds firm. During the raid where the captives are rescued, a soldier asks the man who protested about Al Radwan, but he dismisses him as "one of them," resulting in the man being shot.
