Recap / Invincible (2021) S02 E06 "This Must Come as a Shock"

Go To

Mark returns to Earth after being shaken on Thraxa, but must come to terms with further changes since the two months he's been away. Simultaneous attacks from the Lizard League and the incoming Sequids invasion splits the Guardians of the Globe's attention for the worse.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Robot, voiced by Zachary Quinto, tells Mark that this isn’t Star Trek. Quinto notably played Spock in the Kelvin Timeline films, who has a similar straightlaced attitude while processing his human emotions.
  • Bond One-Liner: Played for Horror. When seemingly crushing Shrinking Rae to death after she attempts to burst out of his body, Komodo Dragon gives one.
    Komodo Dragon: Yum.
  • Came Back Strong: After having his life support turned off, Allen revives even more ripped than he was, with Thaedus estimating he's likely equal to a Viltrumite now. Thaedus admits doing so was a gamble and apologizes for risking his life.
  • Defiant to the End: What does Rex say when Lizard has a gun to the back of his head? "Just do it, you prick."
  • Dramatic Unmask: Thaedus reveals himself as a rebel Viltrumite to Allen by ripping off his beard leaving behind only the distinct Viltrum moustache.
  • Everybody Knew Already: Turns out everybody knew that Shapesmith was a Martian. Except for Black Samson who learned about his secret during a battle.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: A heroic example. Shrinking Rae's attempt to return to her normal size inside Komodo Dragon's body backfires horribly because he's too durable for her to burst out of, leading her to seemingly get crushed to death by his innards.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Komodo eats Shrinking Rae alive and later eats Rex's hand, although the latter costs him his head since he also eats one of Rex's charged tablets with it.
  • Internal Reveal: In a flashback, Black Samson catches Shapesmith reverting to his true form during a battle, and confronts him with that fact when the Martian ship is detected. It's then revealed everyone else on the team, and Cecil for obvious reasons, had long since figured it out and Samson is the one Late to the Realization.
  • It Only Works Once:
    • Shrinking Rae kills Salamander by jumping inside his eye and expanding inside his skull. When she tries the same trick on Komodo, he snatches and swallows her instead. There, he is able to crush her inside him with his Super-Toughness when she tries expanding.
    • After having such good results eating Rae, Komodo tries a similar tactic chomping Rex's hand off even with an explosive pellet in it, but this time he's not durable enough to avoid Your Head Asplode.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Dupli-Kate can spin off a clone to avoid death, but she needs to have free movement to spawn one. Komodo catches her before she can create a replacement and his massive grip around her waist blocks her powers. Although she manages to struggle free just long enough to get one clone out, he grabs that one too and smashes the pair into a gory mess before either can make a third.
    • Similarly, while Rae has the ability to Kill It Through Its Stomach via her size changing, that hinges on her target being weak enough to not handle an entire person suddenly pushing against the walls of their body. Komodo's insides prove to be far too durable for her, and so she ends up crushed inside him while he's comparatively unaffected.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: After spending most of the show being treated as a joke, the Lizard League gets to show just how deadly they can be in the right circumstances. With only Rex Splode, Shrinking Rae, and Dupli-Kate to fight them while the team’s heavy hitters are off in outer space, the Lizard League’s battle with the heroes ends in a blood bath on both sides, with Komodo Dragon seemingly killing Shrinking Rae, killing Dupli-Kate, and biting off Rex’s hand before dying to the latter’s explosive. By the time battle is over, Rex is the only one standing and left at the mercy of King Lizard.
  • "Pop!" Goes the Human: Subverted. Shrinking Rae attempts to expand inside Komodo Dragon after he swallows her, but he's tough enough that he's able to overpower her growth and crush her inside him.
  • The Reveal:
    • Donald is revealed to be a human brain in a robotic body, Omni-Man's body having shielded that part of him from the explosion. Cecil had his memories of dying removed because he didn't want to deal with the potential PTSD issues.
    • Allan is revealed to have the ability to Come Back Strong something even he didn't know about but Thaddeus did, which is why the latter had turned off the former's life support system while apologetically admitting it was a gamble. In turn, Thaddeus reveals his biggest secret: he's a Viltrumite, specifically the only native born Viltrumite to ever rebel against the Empire.
  • Shout-Out: Will is reading Total Consciousness by the noted philosopher Dr. Carl Spackler.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
  • Tempting Fate: Rex plans to hang out and relax with Kate and Rae while the others are gone because the chances of there being two world ending catastrophes simultaneously is non-existent and then the Lizard League break into a missile base...
  • Too Dumb to Live: Komodo Dragon, fully able to see that Rex is holding one of his explosives in his hand and knowing from first-hand experience what they do, decides to eat Rex's hand. The obvious follows.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Cecil reveals that he preserved Donald's brain, placed it into a cyborg body, and had his memories of dying in the explosion removed, Donald calls him out on doing this without his knowledge and consent, as well as keeping him in the dark about it.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Rex assures Eve that just because she screwed up once or twice doesn't negate all the good she's done in the past nor should it discourage her from continuing to try going forward.
  • Your Head A-Splode: Komodo Dragon bites off Rex's hand in the middle of an attack. Unfortunately for him, the tablet Rex was holding in that hand was already charged, so it explodes inside Komodo's mouth, taking his whole head off.
