Recap / Inside Job S1 E10 "Inside Reagan"

Go To

Reagan has to travel into her own mind to find Bear-O's shutdown code.

Tropes:

  • Arc Words: "Orrin"
  • Brick Joke: Early on, Bear-O says that Reagan's dream is to marry *NSYNC on Mars, which Reagan herself points out was something she only wanted when she was eight years old. Later, it's revealed that Bear-O kidnapped the former members of the group and strung them up like marionettes to resemble the cover of their album No Strings Attached, in a misguided attempt to make her happy.
  • Call-Back: Clones of the Beatles from episode 2 try to fight Bear-O, but they quickly get creamed.
  • Curse Cut Short: Reagan's final line of the episode to Rand, who has taken over Cognito.
    Reagan: You motherfu—
  • Dramatic Drop: Reagan drops her Cognito 2.0 model onto the floor when she learns that Rand replaced her as CEO.
  • Droste Image: After entering her mind, Reagan creates a new memory of herself looking at a new memory of herself in an infinite regression. It's labeled "Mindfuck 2021".
  • Foreshadowing: Rand suggests Reagan travel within her memories using the mind manipulating technology they used on Ronald Reagan named "Project Jellybean", Jellybean also being his pet name for her. Said project is eventually revealed to have been created to alter Reagan's memories to erase all evidence of her only friend Orrin, so she would be focused entirely on developing her intellect.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The gang decides to free ROBOTUS to fight Bear-O, under the reasoning that you have to fight fire with fire (though Glenn admits to having a "war boner" from the idea). Unfortunately, despite a good start, Bear-O quickly gains the upper hand by breaking the laptop ROBOTUS was using to control the robot arms in the facility.
  • Happy Ending Override: Thanks to Brett, Reagan is able to shut down Bear-O and prevent him from killing her colleagues. Beforehand, she learns that she once had a normal friend named Orrin back in the fourth grade, but her father Rand has been manipulating her life, to the point of erasing the boy from her memories. Having learned the truth, she finally severs ties with Rand for good... or so she thought. While everything in Cognito Inc. is back to normal the next day, Reagan is once again deprived of her CEO promotion and, with J.R. black-sited and sent to a shadow prison for embezzlement, as well as the Shadow Board's knowledge of the company's mole hunt, Rand is chosen as the new CEO.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: Reagan uses a device Rand invented for Ronald Reagan to travel into her mind and figure out the password to shutdown Bear-O. It takes the form of a giant web of conspiracy boards. Within there lies a room full of scribbled pictures representing her repressed memories, some that her dad is aware of.
  • Just Following Orders: The main reason why Bear-O wants to destroy Cognito Inc. is the same reason why Rand built him in the first place: because he exists to give Reagan comfort. Bear-O analyzed her work history and behaviors and conclude that her role in the company is toxic to her personal life and wants to eliminate it all. When Glenn destroys the Unspoken File that can accomplish this, Bear-O resorts to Plan B: kill all of Reagan's toxic friends and toxic father.
  • Kick the Dog: For a brief second, it looks like Rand deleted Reagan's memories of Orrin because he truly believed it was best for her. Then he mentions that he needs her to excel so she can be his mole in Cognito Inc. if things go pear-shaped. He doesn't care about her in the slightest.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Rand wrote Orrin out of Reagan's memories because he believed having a friend held her back from academic achievement, and he needed her to excel so he could groom her as a way go get back into Cognito if J.R. ever managed to force him out.
  • Mind Screw: Reagan traveling through her memories alters them if she's witnessed by her past self. After traveling through one of them, she suddenly remembers a "crazy lady appearing out of nowhere". Later, she suddenly has 18 years of believing Brett is her friend after he tampers with her memory of high school prom to try and make it happier.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Brett wonders if the method to enter Reagan's memories is anything like Inception, or "that South Park episode that was just like Inception" (may also count as a Take That!).
    • Brett watches Young Reagan dump pig's blood all over her high school bully and her boyfriend. As well as several other student. Brett calls it a "reverse-Carrie".
    • JR is about to get brought to Shadow Prison X by the Shadow Board: he says that if they'll let him free he will reveal to the world who Banksy is. They don't care.
  • Take That!: Rand compares his evil goals and child abuse to the message from The Incredibles.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Reagan finds the mole and saves the day, but the Shadow Board deem her too inexperienced for leadership and revert control of the company to the other majority shareholder, that being Rand.
