Recap / I Dream Of Jeannie S 1 E 2 My Hero

Go To

When Jeannie tells Tony that a man hit her while she was shopping, he insists on confronting the fellow — only to find that the incident happened 2000 years ago in her hometown with a giant named Ali. While Jeannie becomes distracted planning their wedding, an auctioneer sells Tony into slavery.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Proposal: Being a man of the 60s, Tony is a firm believer that a man shouldn't hit a woman and therefore goes to confront the man who struck Jeannie. He doesn't find out till much later that standing up for her this way constitutes a proposal of marriage in her culture.
  • Exact Words: When Jeannie's father starts pumping him about how much livestock he has, Tony says that he has as much as anyone in Cocoa Beach. Of course, given that Cocoa Beach is a city, that means none.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: When Jeannie blinks them to the market where the man hit her, it turns out that it's 2000 years in the past. Tony has difficulty adjusting, continually acting as though the same rules that apply in his own time and place are still respected here. This gets him whipped for disrespect.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: The hungry Tony tries the food he and his fellow slave Turhan have been given and likes it...until Turhan tells him that it is goats' eyes. This may overlap with Senseless Phagia given that they're in a dark cell at the moment. Turhan, however, considers the dish a delicacy.
  • Incredible Shrinking Man: Jeannie shrinks the giant-sized torturer Ali to rescue Tony from his evil clutches. Tony tells him with great satisfaction that now he can pick on someone his own size.
  • Made a Slave: While trying to escape Ali, Tony hops over a wall into a slave market and gets dragged to the platform to be sold. To make matters worse, the buyer thinks he's too insolent...and she keeps Ali as a torturer.
  • Naked People Trapped Outside: At the end, Tony goes on a double date with Roger and leaves Jeannie sulking...only to find himself in a towel once he steps outside and closes the door.
  • Older Than They Look: Turhan, Tony's fellow slave, claims to be 18, but he looks much older.
  • Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: Tony tries to punch out Ali, only for the punches to have no effect, given his greater size and strength. Oddly, Tony doesn't stop after it becomes clear it isn't doing any good.
  • Time Travel Episode: The episode has Jeannie taking Tony to Ancient Persia.
