Recap / I Dream Of Jeannie S 1 E 3 Guess What Happened On The Way To The Moon

Go To

To prepare for landing on the moon, Tony and Roger are sent to Skull Flats, Utah for a week-long survival mission. Unfortunately, Jeannie, refusing to be left behind, hides in Tony's canteen, dumping out the water to make room. Even more unfortunately, she doesn't understand why she can't use her powers to help him.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Book Ends: Before going on the survival mission, Tony orders Jeannie into her bottle to ensure that she doesn't come along, but leaves the bottle open. Before going on Operation Extinction, Tony orders Jeannie into her bottle, ostensibly for the journey there...and corks it, preventing her from coming to help him.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Tony accidentally falls off a rock while walking backwards talking to her, Jeannie freezes him in place. Tony orders her to let him go...and gravity takes hold again.
  • Hollywood Mirage: When Roger sees a tent in the middle of the desert and Jeannie cooking something over a fire, he tries to call Tony on his walkie-talkie, saying that he's seeing an unbelievable mirage.
  • I Don't Like the Sound of That Place: When the general announces the mission's location, Roger complains about the missions never being to somewhere like "Merry Meadows" or "Happy Valley".
  • No One Gets Left Behind: After twisting his ankle, Tony tells Roger that he can't keep up with him and urges him to go on. Roger refuses, even when Tony points out that the faster he reaches the pick-up spot, the faster he can send help back. Only Tony reminding him of the mission convinces him.
  • Panthera Awesome: A mountain lion comes upon Tony while he's in the desert. As it springs, Jeannie turns it into a white bunny, to Tony's embarrassment when Roger finds him wrestling it.
  • Soup Is Medicine: After Tony stuns himself falling off a rock, Jeannie makes him baktu malali (chicken soup) to make him better. Tony enjoys it, until he remembers that he's not supposed to eat anything on the mission besides what he can find in the desert himself. He's even unhappier when Jeannie reveals that the current bowl is his third.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Dr. Bellows ultimately explains away Tony's increased weight and saddle sores by saying that because he believed so strongly that he had food and a camel, his body reacted accordingly.
