Tropes

  • Bros Before Hoes: Freddie finds Carly and Sam's trips to the mall, especially at the Build-a-Bra store, nauseating and too feminine for him to enjoy, so he partakes in fencing with Spencer. It's even somewhat lampshaded by Freddie and Spencer.
Freddie: Man, I cannot keep hanging out with girls all the time.
Spencer: You wanna come hang with me at the fencing studio?
Freddie: Is it fun? Like, what goes on?
Spencer: Just a bunch of guys with swords swinging 'em around and fighting - your basic dude fun! No gloss.
    Freddie: No bras?
    Spencer: Just bros.
    Freddie: Let's go.
  • Commonality Connection: Spencer and Freddie take up fencing together and start bonding in a way they never bonded with Carly, who being a Girly Girl refuses to engage in such activities in favor of shopping for bras or glitter.
  • Cone of Shame: Ozlottis Dorfman wears a cone around his neck to prevent him scratching his chin rash.
  • Dual Wielding: Marissa pulls this off at the end against Doug Toter.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Marissa kept insisting Freddie could get hurt fencing despite all the heavy armor that fencers wear. She eventually admits she's actually more concerned about Freddie getting engrossed in fencing like his ancestors and becoming unable to quit.
  • Jerkass Realization: Carly undergoes this when she realizes that she pulled Freddie into her vendetta against Spencer and ruined a hobby he really enjoyed in the process.
  • Odd Name Out: The names of Carly's relatives the Dorfmans are Barry, Tess, Faye and Ozlottis.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Carly attacking Spencer and Freddie and working to ruin their lives as retribution simply for leaving her alone with the Dorfmans.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Carly goes on a rampage emotionally, verbally and even physically trying to make Spencer and Freddie's lives as miserable as she can as payback for leaving her to deal with the incredibly obnoxious and awkward family of the Dorfmans for the night while they go fencing. Thankfully, she eventually redeems herself after a My God, What Have I Done? moment and realizing she just tore apart Spencer and Freddie's friendship out of spite rather than reason.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Marissa claims she's against Freddie fencing because the whole Benson family is obsessed with it and have a hard time quitting fencing to focus on anything else ("The Fencin' Bensons").
  • Unwanted Assistance: Doug Toder pretty much rejects any help from his two cohorts Tripp and Clichay. If Clichay attempt to steps in, Doug rebukes him with "I got this!" It gets subverted in the climax when he has to go up against Marissa, but she even scares them away with her ruthless fencing skills.
