Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 05 I Wanna Stay With Spencer

Go To

iWanna Stay With Spencer is the 5th episode in the 1st season of iCarly.

When Carly almost gets hit with a hammer from Spencer's Fan of Hammers during the webcast, their granddad shows up and wants Carly to live with him in Yakima because he thinks Spencer is too irresponsible to take care of her. Carly and her friends have to convince Granddad that Spencer is responsible so she can stay.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Granddad finally allows Carly to stay:
Granddad: I'm not gonna need this.
    Spencer: Look, asthma's tricky...
Granddad: I'm not gonna need this, because I want Carly to stay here with you.
  • Big Brother Instinct: This episode shows just how serious Spencer is about taking care of Carly: he knows all of her favorite foods, how well she does in school/what she needs help in, what to do if her allergies act up (Granddad didn't even know she had allergies), and even his grandfather that, while he gives Carly coffee all of the time, he's always given her decaf and not told her. The final thing that convinces their grandfather to let Carly stay is the fact that Spencer kept Carly's inhaler (something she hasn't needed since she was seven) just in case she needed it.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Granddad is right in that Spencer isn't the world's best role model (as he's a Manchild artist with odd quirks and hobbies). However, Spencer takes Carly's well-being very seriously and knows her better than any other adult (even their parents).
  • Doting Grandparent: Granddad promises to be a very fun, caring grandfather (and it appears he already is one) for Carly when he seizes custody of her away from Spencer. Also the first time we see Granddad, he hands a gift card for the Groovy Smoothie to Carly.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: In the fan video shown at the beginning, a girl named Keri sings a rather long high note which causes her mom's expensive glass cup to shatter to pieces.
Sam: Nice! Did you see that? Why can't she sing that note next to our math teacher's head?
  • Heroic Fire Rescue: When an overheated dinner causes a fire in the kitchen, Spencer saves Carly and takes her down to the lobby with him.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Spencer doesn't mind when Carly comes home with (fake) piercings, goth makeup, and dyed hair, and even says he thinks she looks great, much to their grandfather's fury. Privately, Spencer admits he doesn't like the new look, but doesn't think it's worth getting mad over; kids Carly's age are bound to try and rebel a bit, and this whole thing is probably a phase, so it's best to just let them express themselves and be supportive. Unfortunately, Granddad thinks this just opens the floodgates for worse behavior.
  • Slippery Slope Fallacy: While some of Granddad's concerns are valid, one of his more ridiculous claims is that letting Carly dye her hair, wear goth clothes, and get a piercing will make her partake in dangerous behaviors, like "swimming with hobos." Spencer finds this absurd, since, as far as teen rebellion goes, an emo/goth phase is rather harmless, as it's not like Carly changing her hair or clothes is hurting her or anybody else.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The first thing Granddad does to Spencer the moment Carly leaves is chew out his grandson for endangering his sister on her web show with his hammer fan.
Granddad: Are you out of your mind?!
Spencer: I should have gotten the Strawberry 'Splat?
  • With a Foot on the Bus: Carly almost leaves for Yakima, but it's Spencer giving Granddad her asthma inhaler that finally proves he's responsible, thus letting her stay.
