Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 04 I Like Jake

Go To

Carly forms a crush on a cute boy named Jake, and invites him to sing and play the guitar on iCarly. But Jake turns out to be a horrible singer but Carly doesn't have the courage to tell him that, so Sam and Freddie help by digitally enhancing his voice.

Meanwhile, Spencer creates a statue of himself covered in paint splats.

Tropes:

  • Auto-Tune: What the iCarlys do to Jake so he doesn't sound bad during the webcast.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins with Jake breaking up with Stephanie and ends with them getting back together.
  • Comically Missing the Point: While trying to think of ways to keep Jake from singing on the show, Carly points out the elevator. Sam assumes that the plan is to push Jake down the elevator shaft. Freddie volunteers to be the one to push him. Carly clarifies that she meant to kill the power while Jake is in the elevator to lock him inside.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Freddie throughout most of his screentime in this episode. He spends the whole time antagonizing Jake, and he is reluctant to help Carly modify his voice solely because he wants his regular singing to humiliate him on the web.
  • Did Not Get The Guy: Carly loses Jake back to Stephanie due to watching the webcast last night, and they got back together, much to her disappointment.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Carly asks Freddie to change Jake’s voice so that it can sound great during the livestream. And it does, too well, to the point that his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie, falls in love with him again. That, coupled with the fact that Jake saw Carly kiss Freddie on the nose and assumed they were dating, causes him to get back together with her.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Jake isn't a very good singer, and it shows.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Jake happens to see Carly kiss Freddie on the nose, and thinks that means she’s dating him, and decides to pursue his old ex instead of Carly. But really, she did that because she promised to do so if Freddie agreed to modify Jake’s voice. This greatly annoys Carly when she finds out about this.
Carly: It was just a nose kiss! Aw, come on! It was strictly nasal!
  • Oh, Crap!: Carly and Sam react this way when they actually hear Jake sing. They realize that if they let him sing like that on the show in front of thousands of viewers, Jake will be humiliated.
  • On Three: When Spencer and Carly are preparing to paint Splatter Man, Spencer gives this:
Spencer: Okay, ready? On three! One — I CAN'T WAIT!
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Freddie, envious at Jake for having such great skills, asks him if he can fly. He replies that he has an uncle who's a jet pilot, and has been taking lessons from him.
  • Take a Third Option: Carly is torn between telling Jake he's a bad singer which could risk him not liking her anymore, or letting Jake sing horribly in front of all the iCarly viewers. Freddie decides to take a surprising third option and uses his technology skills to Auto-Tune Jake during the show so he sings flawlessly without a hitch.
