Recap / Hudson And Rex S 1 E 8 Fast Eddies

Go To

After Edward Bullock, a reviled restaurateur's food truck explodes, killing Katya Melnyk, one of his employees, Charlie and Rex find themselves with a few too many suspects, including the involvement of a notorious mobster and bomb maker named Neil Dougherty.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: Katya's death initially appears to have been an accident caused by a leaking propane tank caused by a rival food truck owner, until forensics reveal it to have been caused by a bomb hidden inside the truck. It was hidden there by Gabrielle to be used to scare Caleb and the other employees into not coming forth with their allegations towards her father by planting it in the trunk of Caleb's car. However, the bomb ended up detonating prematurely, blowing up the truck with Katya inside it.
  • Bad Boss:
    • When informed of her death, Edward comments that Katya was like family to him and his daughter Gabrielle. The other food truck owners however claim that Katya was treated like a slave and that she was unable to quit without the threat of being blackballed in the restaurant industry. She was also one of the employees who were going to come forth with an allegation and got a gig at Caleb's new restaurant before her death.
    • Edward's head chef Caleb Cromby tells Charlie that everyone working under Edward, especially the women, has a good reason to quit, but can't because of how vindictive their boss is. This prompted Caleb to become the leader of employees coming forth with allegations towards Edward and his inappropriate treatment of them, which made Caleb a target for his boss and Gabrielle.
  • The Collector: Dougherty is a collector of WWII firearms. One of his pieces is used to shoot at Caleb and was used in the double homicide, which allow the SJPD to finally arrest him. Charlie and Donovan ask why he even kept the gun, with Dougherty admitting that it was a collector’s item and he couldn't bring himself to get rid of it.
  • Dirty Old Man: Part of the allegations made by Edward's female employees is because of his sexual misconduct towards them.
  • Exact Words: After apprehending Dougherty for supposedly being the one who built the bomb and did the drive-by on Caleb, only for him to claim innocence to both, Charlie and Donovan make a deal with him to tell them what he knows in exchange for them looking the other way in regards to his involvement in everything. Dougherty agrees to the terms, only to be arrested anyway after he does. The deal was that he would be let off for the business with Gabrielle, they never said anything about not arresting him for the homicides he committed years ago after the gun used to do it (the same one used by Gabrielle for the drive-by) finally turns up.
  • Foreshadowing: When the truck explosion is revealed to be because of a bomb, Sarah discusses how homemade bombs are inefficient and the explosives tend to burn before they detonate. This alludes to the bomb having exploded prematurely inside the truck before Gabrielle could plant it in Caleb's car.
  • Gangland Drive-By: When Charlie speaks to Caleb again, the latter becomes the target of a drive by. The culprit is Gabrielle who used Dougherty’s gun and car to do it. Although she had no intention of killing Caleb, only to scare him into not coming forward with his allegation.
  • It's All My Fault: After Gabrielle is arrested, Edward reveals that he blames himself for the events of the episode, claiming his daughter only did what she did because of her father's actions. It is enough that he tries and fails to go to jail in her place, although the allegations from his employees will ensure him a trip there anyway.
  • Mad Bomber: Neil Dougherty, a mobster with a history of bomb making and a person of interest in a double homicide in 2008. He was also involved in a bombing of Casey Street resulting in the injury of two innocent bystanders, but got off on a technicality due to an illegal search of his residence that got thrown out of court. He helped out Edward when the latter was in financial trouble, receiving modest payments every week and now runs a bar. He taught Gabrielle how to build the bomb when the two of them were in a relationship and she used his car and gun for the drive by on Caleb, with said gun being the same one used in the homicides.
  • Spanner in the Works: Gabrielle hatched a plan to prevent Caleb and the other employees from coming forward with their allegations towards Edward by scaring Caleb with a bomb planted in the trunk of his car. It all went completely off the rails when the bomb detonated prematurely inside the Fast Eddie's food truck and killed Katya, forcing Gabrielle to improvise with a pretend drive-by. It all eventually leads to her and Dougherty's (since his gun that was used in the drive-by was also used in the double homicide) arrest and the allegations to cause her father's empire to crumble.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: The episode begins with Katya Melnyk driving to get more propane for the Fast Eddie’s food truck for the lunch rush and then pulling off the road to answer her phone, when the truck suddenly goes up in an explosion, killing her instantly. Apparently, the truck blew up from three separate explosions from the full propane tank, the truck's gas tank, and the kitchen. Another explosion happens when Charlie and Rex arrive at the scene, but fortunately nobody got hurt.
  • Taking the Heat: Edward admits to killing Katya and shooting at Caleb, saying that he did it to keep both of them from following through with their allegations. Charlie figures out that he’s lying since Edward isn't someone who would dirty his own hands. When Gabrielle is arrested, Edward outright demands that he be sent to prison instead of her since it was his actions that were responsible for what she did, only for Charlie to tell him that it's out of his hands now. However, all the allegations from his employees means that Edward will eventually be reunited with his daughter in prison, as Charlie and Donovan discuss.
