Brotherly Love

Directed By: Peter Medak

Lewis and Sheppard investigate the murder of David Ralston and begin to suspect his twin brother Adam (Mitchell Lichtenstein) committed the murder. Ballard and Gharty must work together with Detective Landrewsky (Joe Perry), a Washington D.C. narcotics detective, to solve a drug-related murder. Mike Giardello gets approved for a transfer to Baltimore to work as the FBI's liaison to the Homicide unit, which does not make his father happy.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: While talking with Mike, Gaffney tells him he's always supported Giardello and thinks he's a good man.
  • Call-Back:
  • Double Standard: Subverted When Lewis tries to stop Sheppard coming into the house with him while Adam has a gun, she asks if he would do that if she was a man, and he responds yes because he's seen enough people shot.
  • Driven to Suicide: Barely averted - Adam locks himself in his house with a gun, and Lewis and Sheppard come into the house to stop him from killing himself, or someone else. They succeed.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: A variation in that neither the Baltimore nor the D.C police want to investigate the murder Ballard and Gharty get stuck with, a hard-to-solve near-random shooting by a trigger-happy drug dealer after an argument with a customer.
  • Lethal Negligence: Ballard's and Gharty's shooting victim bled to death in the car because his friend drove him to a hospital in Baltimore instead of the nearest one in Washington DC, because they didn't want to admit to their parents that they'd been trying to buy drugs.
  • Mama Bear: Even though Mrs. Ralston is upset about David's death, she tells Lewis and Sheppard she'll do anything to keep Adam out of jail.
  • Mid Life Crisis Car: After separating from his wife, Gharty wants to buy a motorbike, and he begs Landrewski to let him drive Landrewski's drug-seizure sports car when they head back to Baltimore.
  • Shout-Out: When Sheppard wonders why Adam and David had two TV sets, Lewis jokes that maybe one brother wanted to watch Hercules while the other one watched Xena.
  • Twincest: Downplayed - while Adam and David didn't sleep together, they shared almost everything else together, and their relationship was considered a little creepy by others, including David's girlfriend.
  • Twin Switch: Adam claimed he slept with David's girlfriend and she didn't know.
