Bayliss and Pembleton get the case of Tanya Thomson, a young girl found beaten to death and dumped off the highway. This ends up stirring up strong feelings in Bayliss and ends up driving a wedge between himself and Pembleton. Kellerman's grand jury trial comes up, he testifies, and he ends up being cleared, but he doesn't feel vindicated at all.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Bayliss gets angry when Tanya's mother and boyfriend insist they didn't do anything wrong to Tanya.
  • Call-Back: Pembleton brings up Adena Watson as the reason why Bayliss is troubled by the Tanya Thomson case.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: The odd thing, of course, is Pembleton is the one playing good cop to Bayliss' bad cop.
  • Let Off by the Detective: After Kellerman gives her an impassioned speech outside the courtroom about how he's willing to tell the truth even if informing on his corrupt colleagues ends his career, ASA Ingram allows him to only testify as to his own innocence, and does not ask him to talk about anyone else.
  • Oh, Crap!: Pembleton's silent reaction when Tanya's mother confides in him that she's pregnant and confidently tells him that she doesn't think anything bad will happen because this time it'll be her boyfriend's own child.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: This is Bayliss' response when he sees the latest murder he has to investigate is another dead girl.
  • Rabid Cop: Bayliss goes absolutely berserk during the investigation of the Thomson murder, raging at the girl's mother, and then losing his temper with the social worker who visited the girl and accusing her of being an accessory to murder.
  • Rape as Backstory: Bayliss reveals he was molested by his uncle when he was younger, and when he tried to tell his father about it, his father wouldn't believe him.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Though Kellerman drops by the Waterfront ostensibly to celebrate the fact he didn't get indicted, he gives a speech saying how he wished the others had believed in the first place he didn't take any bribes, and storms out.
  • The Tell: Kellerman knows which one of his ex-colleagues in the Arson Unit didn't testify against him because they looked him in the eye afterwards.
  • Wham Line: After Bayliss reveals he was molested (see Rape as Backstory above):
Bayliss: I don't think I want to be partners with you anymore, Frank.
