Recap / Hell Girl S 1 E 3 The Tarnished Mound

Go To

Mamoru Hanagasa is pitching for a pair of scouts for a professional baseball team as fellow high school players Daisuke Iwashita and Shinichi Muroi look on, commenting on his skill. Afterward, Hanagasa beats Muroi up with a baseball bat for supposedly falling off the pitcher's mound and tells Iwashita to take him home and that if anyone asks, Iwashita and Muroi were roughhousing and Muroi fell off the pitcher's mound. Iwashita tries to object, but Muroi stops him so as not to escalate things. Muroi also tells him not to tell the coach as that would get the team suspended from an upcoming tournament, so Iwashita tells Muroi's mother that the two were roughhousing when she asks for an explanation. Muroi is absent from school for the next two days. On the third day, it is announced that Muroi died from his injuries. When Iwashita confronts him, Hanagasa shows no remorse for his actions and says that there is no proof of Iwashita's accusations. Two girls walk by talking about the Hell Correspondence. At the funeral that evening, Muroi's parents and the assembled guests blame Iwashita for Muroi's death and he is the prime suspect in the resulting criminal investigation. Iwashita maintains his innocence and tries to implicate Hanagasa, who avoids suspicion by feigning grief over Muroi's death.

That night, Iwashita submits Hanagasa's name to the Hell Correspondence. Ai receives the message while playing with marbles. Her "grandmother" asks if she is feeling well to which Ai says she is fine and will meet the client. Her "grandmother" comments that she doesn't have a choice as the spider reveals itself on the ceiling. Iwashita is startled by Ai's reflection in the monitor as he tries to reload the site. Ai hands him the black straw doll, lays out the terms of her bargain and accompanies her warning about its consequences with a vision of a river of boiling blood and Iwashita being impaled on spikes.

The next day, the baseball team is still practicing despite being banned from the tournament. Meanwhile, Hanagasa is being consoled over missing the tournament by several girls when he spots Ai standing under a tree. He tries to ask her to come over, but she disappears. Iwashita once again confronts Hanagasa and tries to get him to confess before Iwashita takes matters into his own hands. Hanagasa says that Muroi had no business being on the team and says that he'll sue Iwashita for assault if he starts a fight. Hanagasa also says that the tournament would have damaged his chances of competing professionally due to tiring him out while he is being scouted and Iwashita accuses him of planning the whole thing from the start, which Hanagasa confirms. Hanagasa walks away and Iwashita pulls the thread on the thread on the doll.

Ai rides forth while the scouts tell Hanagasa that they are considering him for the #1 draft pick. After the scouts leave, Hanagasa begins hearing voices chanting his name. Hanagasa smiles at this, but pride gives way to fear was the chants of "Hanagasa!" become chants of "Murderer!" Hanagasa finds himself on a darkened, muddy field under an eerie purple sky. Ichimoku Ren, dressed as a catcher, calls time and tells Hanagasa that he only needs one more strike for a perfect game, handing him a ball that briefly manifests Ren's eye. An unnerved Hanagasa is further startled when Wanyuudo, who is wearing an umpire's uniform, tells Hanagasa to throw him a killer. Hone Onna, showing her ribcage, leads a group of partly-skeletal cheerleaders in taunting Hanagasa as Muroi is called up to bat. Muroi silently takes his position and bunts. Hanagasa manages to throw the ball to first base in time, but the first baseman turns into a skeleton and crumbles from the impact of the ball while "Muroi" makes his way around the bases, ignoring Hanagasa and the minions. Wanyuudo calls Hanagasa out of taking a game so seriously. When Hanagasa realizes that he can't stop "Muroi" legitimately, he grabs a bat and tries to kill "Muroi," but is turned to stone. "Muroi" slams into Hanagasa, shattering the latter's arm to pieces while Wanyuudo calls a safe. The minions confront Hanagasa in their true appearances, and Wanyuudo calls him out on thinking that his skill and accomplishments should single him out as being above reproach. Hanagasa tries to justify himself to the other "players" on the field as Ai appears and banishes him to Hell. As Hanagasa awakens in Ai's boat, several baseballs with Muroi's face float up and say that Muroi joined the team out of love for the game despite not being very good. Hanagasa tells Muroi's voice to go and play as much as he likes, to which Muroi's voice responds that they should play together. Hanagasa begs Muroi to leave him alone, but Muroi's voice says that he can't do that. After all, you can't play baseball alone. Several Murois appear in the boat and restrain Hanagasa as Ai ferries him through Hell's gate.

The next day, Hanagasa has been implicated in Muroi's murder, though he has been reported missing. The fallout from the ordeal means that Iwashita, who is now marked with Hell's seal, has to move away. A candle with Iwashita's name is lit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ambition Is Evil: Hanagasa's actions were motivated by ambition.
  • An Aesop: No matter how skilled you are at something and no matter what accomplishments you make, you are still accountable for your actions.
  • Baseball Episode: It features a high school baseball club.
  • Bittersweet Ending: In contrast to the previous two episodes’ clients, Iwashita’s life does not go back to normal after selling his soul and his name being cleared. Muroi is still dead and moves away to start anew.
  • Crowd Chant: The banishment starts with chants of "Hanagasa!" that slowly become chants of "Murderer!". Notably, it was angrier-sounding in the dub than in the original.
  • Dem Bones: Hone Onna appears with several other skeletal cheerleaders. The baseball game in the banishment is also rigged against Hanagasa by the other "players" turning into inanimate skeletons when he tries to make a play.
  • Entitled Bastard: Ai's minions give Hanagasa a chance to repent for his misdeeds, but he refuses. Unlike Aya and Kisaragi before him, however, he doesn't deny what he did to Ai's minions. Instead, he claims that the person he killed should have been honored to die for his talent!
  • Faceless Eye: Ren puts his eye on a baseball at the beginning of the banishment to spook Hanagasa.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Ai usually gives clients a small taste of what Hell will be like to warn them of the consequences of pulling the thread on the doll; in Iwashita's case, she shows him a vision of himself being impaled on spikes.
  • Ironic Hell: The ferrying-to-Hell scene suggests that Hanagasa is going to be playing baseball with Muroi forever.
  • It's All About Me: Pretty much sums up Hanagasa's attitude.
  • Mind Rape: Before Hanagasa is banished to Hell, he is subjected to a mind rape punishment befitting his misdeeds: he murders a fellow teammate and frames a second, so as punishment, he is forced into a baseball game that's rigged so that the murdered teammate will win the game as supernatural forces interfere with Hanagasa's pitching, mirroring the way Hanagasa placed Iwashita into a situation he couldn't win by framing him.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Hanagasa does this to Muroi, which eventually kills him.
  • Pride: Hanagasa thinks pretty highly of himself. Not a bad thing in itself, but it motivated him to commit horrible acts for his ambitions.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Ren and Wanyuudo give one to Hanagasa.
Ichimoku Ren: Have you forgotten already? You beat a kid to death and blamed another for his murder. Don't you feel any guilt over what you did to them?
Wanyuudo: Just because you have some skill throwing a ball and playing a game, you think you're special and should have the privilege to get away with anything. What a remarkable level of conceit!
  • Rivers of Blood: One of the torments that Ai shows to Iwashita is a river of boiling blood.
  • Taken for Granite: Happens to Hanagasa's arm before it gets shattered. It gets better, not that that helps him in any way.
