Recap / Hell Girl S 1 E 2 The Possessed Girl

Go To

Ryouko Takamura receives a call from a stalker who has been following her for some time, reciting a short poem in a creepy voice. She submits a request to the Hell Correspondence despite not knowing who the stalker is. Meanwhile, an old computer activates in Ai's hut in the sunset world and an old woman with a sewing wheel behind a sliding door tells Ai that she has a message. Ai tells the old woman, who she refers to as "Grandma," that she'll be right there followed by a shot of a colorful spider with three eyes on its back perched on a web outside the hut. Ryouko receives another message from the stalker while Ryouko's father chases him away, threatening to kill him. Ryouko receives a text message saying that her request has been received while Ai watches her from outside.

The next day, Ryouko's father berates a police officer, Akimoto, for not having caught the stalker. Captain Kisaragi comes in and asks Akimoto for a cup of coffee and sits down to discuss the case with Ryouko's father, saying that Akimoto is the prime suspect. However, Akimoto has too many connections to be arrested immediately without reprisal. As a result, the case will need to take a few more months. At school, Ryouko is called into an empty classroom by a teacher she has never seen before and finds herself in the sunset realm. The young man and the old man with the fedora appear nearby and the teacher reveals herself to be the woman in the blue kimono, Hone Onna. Ai arrives and Ryouko tells the group about the stalker's actions. The young man, Ichimoku Ren, and the old man are ambivalent, but Hone Onna encourages her to continue. The old man, who Ai calls "Wanyuudo," transforms into a black straw doll. As in the previous episode, Ai hands the doll to Ryouko and states the terms of her deal. This time, Ai's warning about the consequences of the bargain is punctuated with a vision of Ryouko being attacked by living corpses in a pool of blood. Ryouko awakens outside the classroom with the straw doll.

After school, Ryouko's father arrives to pick her up but spots Akimoto apparently watching the school while standing under a tree, but upon closer inspection finds that Akimoto is dead. Kisaragi ambushes Ryouko's father, bashing him in the head with a shovel. Ryouko finds Kisaragi in her father's car and realizes that he was the stalker the whole time, not Akimoto. Kisaragi takes Ryouko to an abandoned house and attempts to murder her when she doesn't return his affections, resulting in Ryouko breaking the doll's thread. An officer chases Kisaragi away and reveals himself to be Ichimoku Ren. Ren says that since Ryouko pulled the thread, she is now marked with Hell's seal.

In the sunset world, Ai is bathing in a stream near the hut when her "grandmother" says that her nagajuban (under-kimono) has been prepared. Ai dresses up and once again leaves for the world of the living in her fiery carriage. Meanwhile, Kisaragi has followed Ryouko to the hospital where her father is undergoing treatment for his injury. Kisaragi crosses in front of the glass doors of the hospital, showing a skeleton in the reflection. Hone Onna greets him from the front desk, but he doesn't notice. In the hall, the lights go out and Kisaragi sees blood flowing out from under a door. He opens it to find the blood overflowing from a sink. Kisaragi is dragged to the floor by pale hands, but Ren arrives and tells him not to leave the faucet running. Kisaragi runs away as Ren turns off the faucet with several bloody corpses appearing in the mirror. Kisaragi arrives at the room where Ryouko is just as Wanyuudo, dressed in a doctor's lab coat, tells Ryouko that her father is dead before walking out. After Wanyuudo leaves, Kisaragi takes the opportunity to walk over to Ryouko. Kisaragi pulls a knife out and says that she'll be seeing her father soon, but Ryouko whips around to reveal a skull for a face. The skeleton of Ryouko's father jumps at him and yells at him for making his daughter suffer. Kisaragi stomps on the skeleton only to reveal his own corpse staring up at him. He panics and runs out into the hall, where he is confronted by Ai's minions. Kisaragi blames everything on Ryouko for rejecting him and Ai appears in a swirl of cherry blossoms to send him to Hell. Kisaragi awakens on the boat and Hone Onna appears, stabbing him in the chest with a skeletal hand while a jellyfish floats by overhead. Ai ferries Kisaragi through the gate of Hell as Hone Onna quotes his poem back at him.

Ryouko's father, who has recovered, arrives to pick her up from school and lets her decide where her family has dinner that night. Ryouko looks at the seal on her chest and a candle with her name is lit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Afterlife Antechamber: Before being banished to hell, Kisaragi is given a punishment befitting his misdeeds: he's a stalker who backed Ryouko into a corner and tried to kill her, so as punishment, he spends the banishment in a hospital being chased by blood, ghostly hands, and the corpse of his stalking victim's father, terrifying him as he terrified Ryouko.
  • Alien Sky: The light in the "sky" to Hell is a glowing jellyfish.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The song the stalker sings is "Doggy Policeman" which is a Japanese children's song. It's also used as the intro for the video game Frogger.
  • Cherry Blossoms: Ai appears in a flurry of them to claim Kisaragi.
  • Dem Bones: Hone Onna can reveal parts of her skeleton. The Hell banishment also uses skeletons of Ryouko and her father.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: One of the eyes on the spider's back is seen moving.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: While Ryouko’s father isn’t named in the episode, if you pay attention to the Banishment scene, his name is Youji.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Kisaragi tries to murder Ryouko when she rejects his advances to his face.
  • Ironic Echo: Hone Onna recites Kisaragi's poem from the beginning of the episode back at him while on the boat to Hell.
"Little kitty, little kitty, little lost cat... where in the world is your home at?"
  • Never My Fault: Ai's minions give Kisaragi a chance to repent for his misdeeds, but he instead chooses to argue that his attempted murder of Ryouko was her fault for rejecting his affections.
  • No Name Given: Ichimoku Ren and Hone Onna's names are not given, but Wanyuudo's is, so all of the recaps from here on will use all three of their names for convenience.
  • Police Are Useless: Because they're being led by the culprit in the first place.
  • Shovel Strike: Kisaragi attacks Ryouko's father with a shovel. Thankfully, Mr. Takamura recovers.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Kisaragi towards Ryouko.
  • Unnamed Parent: While Ryouko’s dad is named (though it’s a Freeze-Frame Bonus of sorts), her mother isn’t named.
  • Voice of the Legion: The skeleton of Ryouko's father in the Hell banishment has a deep, demonic-sounding voice.
