Recap / Haven S 5 E 2 Speak No Evil

Go To

Continuing where "See No Evil" left off, Duke goes to the beach where Mara left Nathan and helps patch up his bullet wound. Nathan explains what happened to him and laments that Mara is pure evil. Duke explains that he might be the one causing the Barrow Trouble and he has no idea how to fix it.

Mara wanders through town and sees a woman putting up posters advertising a vitamin supplement. Mara walks up and obnoxiously says the advertisement is a fraud. Annoyed, the woman tells her to buzz off. Mara says she likes her outfit... then steals her pencil and stabs her in the eye with it, killing her.

Mara puts on her clothes and wanders some more, then runs into Vickie. Vickie doesn't know about Mara and greets her as Audrey. Mara says she's glad she found her because she needs her help. They go back to the Thinny in the woods. Mara tells her to draw the area and she does. Mara then takes the drawing and tears it in half, then celebrates when this causes the barrier blocking the portal to tear in half as well. She tells Vickie that for her contribution, she shall be spared when she retrieves William and destroys everybody, then tries to step through the portal, but it closes again before she can. Vickie asks what is going on. Mara says her Trouble was not enough; she has to make a better one. It is only because she is rather fond of her that she's not going to kill her. She shoots Vickie with the taser she took from Dwight.

Vickie wakes up and walks back to town, calling Nathan and explaining what happened. Mara stole her access card to the morgue. He realizes what Mara plans to do and rushes out with a shotgun.

Gloria examines the body of the cafe owner Mara murdered. The vial of black beads she collected in "William" starts to act up, with the beads of aether flying around trying to burst out. She sees on a security camera Mara entering the building with her gun drawn.

Nathan bursts in and finds the morgue ransacked, but Gloria managed to hide from Mara and kept the vial safe. She asks why Audrey is acting crazy. Left with no choice, he explains about Mara. She digests the info and wonders if Audrey was just a disguise all along. He swipes the vial while she isn't looking. He then uses the police radio to tell all the normal officers that if they run into Audrey, tell her he has what she is looking for.

Dave finally wakes up. Vince bribes him with food, soda, and a porn magazine to reveal what he knows about the other world. In tears, he explains that back in 1983, he was walking down the beach when that same monster that tried to drag him into the hole back in "The Lighthouse" grabbed him and dragged him through a portal. It beat the crap out of him, but he barely managed to break free and jump back through the portal before it closed. That is all he knows, he swears. He's absolutely terrified that the monster wants to finish the job.

Vince asks an officer who is a member of The Guard for footage from the recorder in Dwight's car. The man says he needs Dwight's authorization, but Vince reminds him that he's his true leader and he agrees. Dwight comes in and explains about the Barrow Trouble. Some people found out and blame the Barrow family, so he asks Vince to assign The Guard to protect them. He then berates Vince for keeping secrets from him, like how Mara created The Troubles. Vince claims Dwight is like the son he never had, but that he had his reasons for not telling him everything.

Mara calls Nathan and says she got the message. He says here's the deal. He will give her one bead. She will use it to break through the portal and leave Haven in peace forever. She asks why she would agree to that, and he threatens to destroy them, leaving her stranded in Haven and separated from William forever. She asks if he is really willing to give Audrey up, but he says she's not her and he wants her gone. She agrees to the terms and tells him to meet her at the Thinny in the woods in a few hours.

Duke is at the docks asking a fisherman if he has seen Jennifer, but the man says all he sees are birds and fish. He suggests he call the coastguard. Duke does just that. Dwight meets him and says more people are getting their faces stitched up. He suggests they meet the Barrow family and try to figure out how to control it. They arrive, but find the place ransacked, with Henry horribly beaten up. Dwight realizes The Guard never got the memo from Vince to protect them.

They get Henry to the hospital and his family gathers in his room. Dwight goes to talk to them. Duke asks a nurse if Jennifer has come in. She makes a phone call and shakes her head no, but then her mouth gets sewn shut. Horrified, Duke runs away.

Collette tells Dwight that she has no idea how their Trouble works, but her father was a child back in 1929, so he might know. They try to question him, but unfortunately, he is senile and rambles about Collette's talent with rose bushes. They keep trying, and eventually get through to him. He talks about how when he was a kid, he enjoyed taking sailing lessons. One day, the instructor said the lessons will have to stop due to lack of funds. He got upset and refused to believe it. Then the instructor's eyes, ears, and mouth got sewn up. Collette's father starts to cry, saying it was the most horrible thing he had ever seen. Dwight says he understands now.

A nurse tells Dwight that a dead body was found washed up on the beach and brought in. She shows him, and to his horror, it is Jennifer. The nurse says judging by her condition, she was dead long before she entered the water.

Dwight meets Vince and calls him out on not assigning the Barrow family protection like he asked. Vince claims he was busy tending to Dave. Dwight says he wants The Guard's help to capture Mara and force her to undo all The Troubles, but Vince is afraid that if they find out she caused The Troubles, they will kill her. Dwight tells him to wake up. She is not the Audrey they know and love, she is a homicidal maniac who needs to be stopped.

Nathan shows up, saying he got Dwight's call. Vince leaves. Dwight says he figured out how the Barrow Trouble works. When the person denies bad news, the people who told him get sewn up. Duke's spilled blood was a Red Herring. What all the victims had in common is that they could potentially tell him that Jennifer is dead, and he definitely doesn't want to hear that. Dwight realizes Nathan caught the tail end of his conversation with Vince, and apologizes for his insensitivity, but Nathan says he's right, Mara must be stopped. He has a plan, but first he has to deal with Duke.

Nathan meets Duke at the docks, where he is fondling one of Jennifer's shirts. Nathan tells him how the Barrow Trouble works and breaks the bad news: Jennifer is dead. Duke screams that it can't be true, and Nathan's eyes, ears, and mouth get sewn shut. Duke realizes Nathan is right and he must admit it. He sadly drops Jennifer's shirt into the water, symbolically letting her go. The stitches disappear and Nathan gasps in relief. Duke says if he had never brought Jennifer to Haven, she would still be alive. Nathan says she would have come to Haven eventually, and she was special. Her death will not be in vain.

Later, Nathan drives to the Thinny in the woods and meets Mara, who pulls a gun on him and tells him not to try any funny business. He gives her a vial with one of the aether beads. She takes it and, out of his line of sight, splits it in half with her fingers and puts one half in her pocket. She crushes the other half into powder and covers her hand with it, then says she will give Nathan a new Trouble to open the portal, then she'll bring William back and they'll continue their work. He protests that they had a deal, but she scoffs and asks him if he would honor a deal with a weed. She tries to leave her hand print, but he backs away. She tells him to hold still or she'll shoot him. She suddenly notices Vickie is in his truck, drawing the area. She knocks Nathan down, then drags Vickie out of the vehicle and slams the door on her hand, crushing it. Nathan manages to grab the drawing. She laughs and asks if he's already forgotten that Troubles don't work on her. He says he knows... but she's not immune to this. He taps the drawing, causing a tree branch to swing and smack Mara in the face, knocking her out cold. The black powder on her hand is blown away by the wind and disappears. Grief stricken at harming Audrey's body, he cuffs her.

Vince brings his laptop to Dave's hospital bed and shows him the footage he got from Dwight's car. It shows that when they entered the cave under the lighthouse to banish William, over an hour passed until the lighthouse collapsed. However, Vince points out that by his reckoning, they were only in there for about five minutes. Something screwy is going on. Dwight arrives with some members of The Guard and Collette. Collette says Henry has woken up, but his spine is broken and he's paralyzed. Vince offers condolences, but she slaps him across the face and storms off. The Guard declare that they have judged Vince incompetent, because he completely ignored the people who really need help. They have chosen Dwight as their new leader. Nathan calls and says Vickie is headed to the hospital, and he's captured Mara. Dwight congratulates him and says to hold her until they arrive.

Gloria meets Duke and tries to comfort him about Jennifer's death. She informs him that she has no living relatives. He asks permission to take her body so he can bury her privately. She agrees, even though it is technically illegal.

Nathan ties Mara up and puts her in the back of his truck. He kisses her on the lips, and she wakes up. She talks like Audrey does, tearfully telling him, "I'm still here." She then reverts to Mara and yells at him not to touch her. Believing this to genuinely be Audrey reaching out, he makes up his mind and drives away.
