Go To

Continuing where "When The Bough Breaks" left off, Audrey touches Duke's chest and leaves a hand print. As she does, she has a flashback of her past self (with brown hair) and William skinny dipping and making out. She smiles, but snaps out of it when Nathan speaks to her. Meanwhile, William and his two thugs are fishing when he looks up, smiles, and says, "Finally!" Audrey assures everyone that she is herself, but Duke looks worried. William tells his thugs to carry on fishing, as he has a date.

Jennifer talks with Duke and is not happy that he got his Trouble back. He asks Nathan to help him test if he truly got the Crocker Trouble back, so Nathan pricks his finger and dabs a drop of blood on Duke's hand. Duke absorbs it and his eyes turn silver. Ben says now that they've proven that his ability is back, he will put his affairs in order and walks away. Duke worries that he will become crazy like Wade, but Nathan says he is nothing like him. Duke says he saw the look on Audrey's face and he's worried, but Nathan says she should be fine once William is defeated.

Ben gives Aaron and Gloria a final kiss and goes back into the house. Gloria asks Audrey if she believes in the afterlife. She says she does, given that Kyle Hopkins' Trouble (see "Sins Of The Fathers") created ghosts. Gloria says that even though her job has to do with cold science, she believes in an afterlife that has nothing to do with The Troubles, as there has to be something more to the world. A gunshot goes off. Aaron is startled by the noise and cries, but nothing happens. A grief-stricken Duke walks up and says the deed is done and it is now safe for Aaron to cry, handing Gloria a baby blanket. He says he will understand if Gloria hates him for the rest of her life for killing Ben, but she hugs him and cries into his chest, then wraps Aaron in the blanket.

Jennifer comforts Duke and says he did the right thing, saving countless lives from Aaron's Trouble. Duke says it is not over and William will just keep giving people Troubles. They have to send him away today.

Jennifer, Audrey, Nathan, and Duke go over the book "Unstake My Heart". Since the others can't see the glowing maze symbol and words in it, Jennifer uses Nathan's maze tattoo as a guide. She explains that four people need to stand on the cave's maze symbol's four corners to activate The Door. The four people need to be from a different world. Since Agent Howard had Jennifer adopted, they figure she was from the other dimension of The Barn. They also figure Audrey and William qualify as well. Vince and Dave are combing the records trying to find the fourth person. Duke points out William will not step on the symbol willingly, but Audrey says they will just capture him.

Duke and Jennifer leave to meet Dwight. Nathan asks what Audrey saw when she gave Duke his Trouble back. She says some memories of her original self came back. Her name was Mara and William was telling the truth. Mara deeply loved William and they did terrible things together. Audrey says her plan is to pretend to be Mara and seduce William. Once he lets his guard down, Nathan will shoot him with a tranquilizer dart. He worries that she will be knocked out as well, but she jokes that if that happens, he can just carry them both to the lighthouse. She says she can sense William's presence now and he is at Haven Lookout.

Duke and Jennifer meet Dwight, Vince, and Dave. They figure that William's thugs could be used as the fourth person, so Duke and Dwight will try to capture them. Jennifer will help Vince and Dave try to find other people who Agent Howard got adopted. Dave objects, saying The Door must not be opened again, but is overruled.

Audrey meets William at Haven Lookout and introduces herself as Mara. He is overjoyed and says he never gave up hope that they would be reunited. She caresses his face and literal sparks fly between them. Nathan hides behind a tree and tries to snipe him, but Audrey is in the way. When Audrey brings up the memory of them swimming together, he offers to take her to that spring and they walk together. Nathan runs ahead, trying to get a better shot.

Dwight gets a call saying the thugs have been spotted. As they walk there, he hands Duke a taser since they can't use guns. Dwight assures that Ben's death will be listed as a suicide and Haven needs people like Duke. Duke coughs up blood into his hand, and he absorbs it (this is significant because in other episodes, Duke's blood absorption doesn't work on his own blood). He claims he's fine and they keep walking.

Nathan keeps aiming at William, but Audrey's body is still in the way.

Duke and Dwight find the thugs and shoot the big thug with their tasers, but are horrified when it has no effect. The thugs advance on them, but stop and say they will deal with them later. They break up into a swarm of black beads and fly away. They realize William created them the same way that he created the monster in "Shot In The Dark". Since they were created on Earth, they're useless as the fourth person for the figure.

As they walk, William explains that "they" punished the two of them for their crimes by imprisoning him deep within The Barn and forcing her to go through a cycle of false memories. Audrey asks if Agent Howard was one of "them", but he says he is nothing.

The thugs find Nathan's hiding place and drag him into the open. William thanks him for destroying The Barn and paving the way for his freedom. The thugs handcuff Nathan's hands behind his back and start beating him up. Audrey begs William to make them stop, but he tells her to do it. She orders them to stop and they obey. William hands her a box and tells her to put them back. She opens it and the thugs break up into black beads, which all flow back into the box. William congratulates her, saying she is becoming more and more like Mara. She has a flashback of Mara and William, in Colonial attire, running through the woods. They stop to rest and William plants his sword into the ground, worrying that their pursuers will separate them as punishment for their crimes. Mara says he won't let that happen and they kiss. The flashback ends and Nathan begs Audrey to put the box down. William tells her to embrace power again and to mark Nathan with a hand print. Audrey points out Nathan already has a Trouble and asks what will happen. William replies it will be fun to find out.

Vince goes to the adoption agency and asks the clerk, Lily Moffatt, for their files. She reveals her circular maze tattoo and says she already gave them. He asks what she means and she says Dave took them earlier, claiming he was acting on behalf of Vince, leader of The Guard.

Dwight and Duke meet Jennifer, who says someone broke into the Haven Herald's records and took Sebastian Cabot's journal. Duke coughs up blood again and falls to his knees. When his hands touch the ground, the grass dies in an expanding circle. Horrified, Dwight and Jennifer back away. Duke gets up and the decay stops. Jennifer goes to him and he says he has no idea what is going on.

Nathan begs Audrey not to listen to William, but she goes up to him and prepares a black bead. Suddenly, she tells him now and Nathan headbutts her, knocking her and William out cold.

Duke continues to insist he is fine, dismissing the decay as a side effect of getting his Trouble back. Jennifer checks him and says he's burning up, so she goes to get some aspirin. Dwight asks for the truth. Duke says he doesn't know what is happening, but he needs to see this through to the end.

Dave returns to the Haven Herald to find Vince waiting for him. Vince says he knows Dave is interfering with their search. Dave says he couldn't allow them to know who the fourth person is. Vince wonders if he is the fourth person, and Dave scoffs and says it isn't all about him. Dave finally admits he was the fourth person; Agent Howard was the one who arranged him to be adopted by Vince's family. Dave says he has been to the other world, and he doesn't want anything to do with it. Duke and the others arrive, asking for some aspirin, and Dave tries to escape. Vince tells Dwight to grab him and he does. Dave panics and says if they open The Door, he'll be sucked through, and the other world is a nightmare.

Nathan takes William and Audrey to the cave under the lighthouse, ties William up, and asks Audrey to hold on until the others arrive. William says he has won because he knows in the end, Audrey won't send him away. Annoyed, Nathan threatens him, but he reminds him that he can't hurt him without hurting Audrey. Nathan says he has an idea and kicks him in the groin. William falls to his knees screaming, but Audrey just grunts a little. The others arrive and drag Dave in, kicking and screaming. Duke says he doesn't know how much longer he can last before he has another episode. Jennifer says they can get him some help after they banish William. He wonders if she will be sucked through, but she says she won't leave him.

They tell Audrey and Nathan about Dave's secret and Vince orders him to cooperate and stand on the symbol. Duke winces in pain and William says he is a dead man. Speaking quietly so only Duke can hear, he explains that whenever a Crocker absorbs blood, the Trouble is stored within him, dormant. When Audrey restored his Trouble, she also awakened all the Troubled blood that the Crockers had absorbed over the centuries and now flows through his bloodstream. They are activating one by one, and Duke's body can't handle the stress. Jennifer asks what he said, and Duke says it was nothing. She says the book has not given any new instructions, so he asks what she thinks they should do. She considers and says to position the four other-worlders on the symbol.

Nathan drags William to one corner, and William warns that if they open the door, they could unleash something worse. Duke weakens, and Dave grabs his gun, saying he is getting out of there and will shoot anyone who tries to stop him. Vince tries to calm him down and Dave fires. However, Dwight stands behind Dave, so right before the bullet reaches Vince, it makes a u-turn and punches through Dave's shoulder before hitting Dwight in his bulletproof vest. Vince is shocked that his brother was willing to kill him. Jennifer sees how much pain Duke is in, but he says to worry about him later and take care of William now.

Nathan and Dwight hold William in one corner, Audrey steps on another, Vince drags Dave to the third, and Jennifer steps on the fourth. She waves the book over the center of the symbol and a hole opens up, revealing a cloudy void. William begs for mercy, promising to save Duke if they spare him. In a trance, Dave shoves Vince away and walks into the hole. Vince grabs his hand at the last second and Dave snaps out of it, begging his brother to save him. Left with no choice, Nathan and Dwight release William and grab Vince, trying to help pull Dave out of the hole, but something unseen grabs Dave's legs and tries to pull him down. William goes to Audrey and begs for help.

They finally manage to pull Dave out. William tells Audrey if she lets Nathan throw him in the hole, she'll be more evil than Mara ever was. Audrey says she won't let Nathan do it... because she wants to do it herself and shoves him into the hole. As he falls backwards, he grabs her hand. More sparks fly between them, but Nathan punches him, causing him to lose his grip and fall into the void, screaming. Jennifer waves the book over the hole and it closes. She collapses and Duke holds her, asking what is wrong. She says they should never have opened The Door and William wasn't the one they should have been afraid of. She closes her eyes and a horrified Duke says she's not breathing.

Duke frantically tries to revive her and he starts shedding tears of blood. Nathan asks what is happening to him. With a voice full of hate and contempt, Mara says he is good as dead. She turns to the others and asks, "Now...who's going to help me get William back?"

To Be Continued...

  • Continuity Nod: When Jennifer is annoyed that her True Sight means she's the only one who can see the Guard symbol on the cover of Unstake My Heart, she asks Nathan to uncover his tattoo.
  • Double Consciousness: Discussed. Audrey doesn't remember Mara in the same way she remembers being Lucy or Lexie or Sarah, and this is unsettling to her, because it means Mara is "different" than the other personas.
  • Friend in the Black Market: Jennifer identifies herself as one of the four people born in another world needed to make the door appear, based on everything she's found out about herself this season, and resignedly tells Duke he's "living with an illegal alien." Duke reassures her he knows a guy who does green cards.
  • Flashback Cut: When Audrey places her hand on Duke's chest to re-Trouble him, she gets a brief flash of Mara and William.
  • Pre-Sacrifice Final Goodbye: Subverted in the just the most heartwrenching way. Ben is saying goodbye to Aaron, and announces he's going inside the house to get the baby's favorite blanket. Gloria and Audrey, clearly expecting him to return, muse on the philosophical existence of an afterlife that is abruptly interrupted by a gunshot. Everyone realizes at once what's happened. It's confirmed when Aaron starts to cry, and nothing happens. Then a shell-shocked Duke walks outside, holding the blanket Ben had been getting, and hands it to Gloria.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Though at the start of the episode, Duke assures Nathan he's come to terms with what needs to be done and isn't worried it's going to negatively affect him, he emerges from the house after killing Ben completely traumatized.
  • Split Personality Take Over: As Audrey dabbles more in creating Troubles, she gets more and more of a sense of who the original persona in her body was. She learns her name (Mara), and gets flashbacks of her. At the end of the episode, the completed ritual that sends William into the void causes Mara to take over completely.
