Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 1 E 8 LODRSVP

Go To

After successfully stealing Aquaman's family jewels, Harley gets an invite from the Legion of Doom.

Tropes:

  • Beneath Suspicion: Kite Man boasts that the Legion confiscated the weapons of their members, but didn't bother checking the help, which is why he was able to keep his kite. Equally likely is the Legion simply didn't care.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: In-universe, what people remember most from Harley's heist of Aquaman's jewels is Ivy in a bikini.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Harley finally gets into the Legion of Doom, but her relationship with Ivy is strained, and it ends with Harley getting reunited with the Joker.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Harley's crew decides to rob Aquaman. His Curb-Stomp Battle of the Legion of Doom demonstrates that robbing him was bad idea.
  • Cassandra Truth: Ivy tells Harley about Lex's plan to use Harley to get Ivy into the Legion, but when the Legion accepts her in spite of Ivy's refusal, Harley assumes Ivy was lying to her in an attempt to keep her around.
  • Clothing Appendage: At the Legion of Doom, Clayface molds part of his body so he appears to be wearing a dinner jacket and a tie.
  • Deadly Dodging: Harley goads Aquaman into blasting her while she's in front of a fish tank, causing Aquaman to freak out when the fish spill out of the tank and can't breathe.
  • Double Entendre: Aquaman's family jewels, which Sinestro mocks when Aquaman shows up at the Legion of Doom to confront Harley.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Kite Man tries to intervene in the battle against Aquaman, dramatically opening his kite and charging in, only to get caught by a crosswind and blown out a hole in the roof Aquaman had blasted open a few moments earlier.
    • Clayface tries to pull one over Aquaman by impersonating Superman. Aside from the fact that he shape-shifts right in front of Aquaman, he gets the name of Superman's home planet wrong (Kryptalon instead of Krypton).
  • Flipping the Bird: When KGBeast loses out to Harley, he swaps his artificial hand for one with an extended middle finger and walks out.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After seeing Sy's sister, Clayface claims he couldn't imagine being a deformed lump.
  • Kick the Dog: Bane steps on some fish that fell out of the fish tank when Aquaman is trying to scoop them up just because Aquaman is too busy to stop him.
  • Large Ham: Aquaman is every bit as hammy as Clayface, to the point that Clayface impersonating him is an entirely believable act.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Harley takes advantage of Aquaman's care for sea creatures and tricks him into destroying a large aquarium. He is forced to retreat in order to save them, not needing to be killed by Harley or the other villains.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Dr. Psycho's reaction to getting slammed around by a giant tentacle is to simply say to Sy, "Yeah, I'm gonna need you to explain that."
  • Mood Whiplash: After a tearful reconciliation with his mutant sister, Sy releases her from beneath the mall... and she promptly goes on a bloody rampage.
  • No-Sell: After Harley knocks Aquaman down with a punch to the neck, her subsequent hits have no effect.
  • Off with His Head!: Aquaman chops off Clayface's head for impersonating Superman (badly). Clayface just puts it back on.
  • Pass the Popcorn: While Aquaman takes on the rest of the Legion of Doom, Luthor calmly eats an appetizer.
  • Sadistic Choice: Lex admits to Ivy that he only gave Harley an invite to the Legion so he could get to Ivy, then threatens not to accept Harley if Ivy doesn't also join. Ultimately, Harley driving off Aquaman gets the Legion to accept her anyway, which drives a wedge between Harley and Ivy when Ivy tells Harley about Lex's true motives and looks like a liar because of the change in circumstances.
  • Saying Too Much: Kite Man calls Ivy "babe" when dramatically coming to her rescue. Harley comments on it, but lucky for Ivy, Aquaman interrupts before she has to explain.
  • Sexy Surfacing Shot: Of Ivy getting lifted out of the water by her monster kelp, wearing a green bikini.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: Clayface tries to make Aquaman stand down by turning into Superman. With his poor acting skills (he claims to be from "Kryptalon", among his general character inaccuracies) and the fact he transformed right in front of him, Aquaman is not fooled for a second and chops his head off (luckily Clayface can survive that).
  • Shout-Out:
    • Harley complains that listening to Aquaman (and Clayface) talk is like a scene from Frasier.
    • Ivy's entire swimming outfit is exactly like Ursula Andress' in Dr. No, just all-green instead of all-white.
  • Take That!: Scarecrow lists the "heavy hitters" of the Legion of Doom, as Sinestro, Lex Luthor, and Roger Goodell, and that they stand for the anthem here.
  • Talk to the Fist: Aquaman shows up at the Legion of Doom to confront Harley about stealing his family jewels. She responds by punching him in the throat mid-speech.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Despite the villains outnumbering Aquaman, none of them were able to take him down, because most of them had their weapons taken away before entering the party.
  • Xanatos Gambit: The outcomes for Luthor's plan all either move Ivy towards joining the LOD, or punish her for refusing while costing him nothing (assuming he doesn't care much one way or the other whether Harley is in the Legion). A. Ivy joins. B. Ivy refuses and tells Harley, driving a wedge between them when she's accepted anyway (what happens). C. Ivy convinces Harley the LOD doesn't want her so she drops out, hurting her best friend. D. Ivy says nothing and Harley is accepted, meaning all her friends are now in the LOD and he can manipulate her through them.
  • Your Mom: Aquaman says King Shark's mother would be disappointed in him. When King Shark says Aquaman is not his dad, Aquaman says that's not what she said.

Sy and Mirielle

Sy's sister was turned into a tentacle monster decades ago, and he's finally apologizing to her for abandoning her in the sewers. They make up and he sets her free, much to the dismay of the entire world.

How well does it match the trope?
