Ups And Downs

Manny is called to City Hall to fix a broken elevator- and ends up being trapped inside it!

”Ups And Downs” provides instances of:

  • Brick Joke: Early in the episode, Mr. Lopart breaks a table while trying to run a "Jar of Jellybeans" Contest (long story); later, when the tools run to Kelly’s to get a new elevator relay for Manny, Mr. Lopart is seen in the store, buying a new table.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Lyle and Leland Lopart can be briefly seen walking with Mrs. Lopart outside City Hall.
  • Elevator Failure: The main plot of the episode involves Manny becoming stuck in an elevator in City Hall when the door fails to open, with the tools having to figure out how to free him by themselves.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: One is triggered when Manny performs a Pun Based Title Drop (see below).
  • "Jar of Jellybeans" Contest: Mr. Lopart is running one, with the prize for winning being the jar of jellybeans. Squeeze guesses that the jar has “two hundred thousand million” jellybeans, while Pat, being Pat, thinks that it has 10. Before anyone else can guess, however, the jar ends up being spilled.
Turner: Hey, I know how many jellybeans are in the jar now. None!
  • Pun-Based Title: If something “has its ups and downs”, it has a few problems, while the plot of the episode involves fixing an elevator, which literally go up and down.
  • Somewhere, an Entomologist Is Crying: In an in-universe case of this, Rusty believes a ladybug is a bee.
  • Title Drop: One sets off an "Everybody Laughs" Ending:
Mayor Rosa: Was it [the elevator] easy to repair?
Manny: Well, we had a few ups and downs.

Bloomin’ Tools

Manny goes to Jackie Greenway’s new apartment, to fix some stuck shutters on one of her windows- the shutters are easy enough to get loose; however, the opened window only gives a view of a brick wall.

Tropes in “Bloomin’ Tools” include:

  • Animal Reaction Shot: There’s one of Fluffy shaking her head after Mr. Lopart gets his fingers stuck in the Chinese finger trap again.
  • Artistic License – Biology: In an in-universe example of this, Rusty believes a butterfly is a bat.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: One happens when the butterfly from the beginning of the episode lands to drink nectar from the flowers in Jackie’s new window box… and Rusty screams and calls it a bat again.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Mrs. Portillo at one point gives Manny some flowers, for use in decorating his shop; at the end of the episode, Manny puts these flowers in a window box for Jackie Greenway.
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?:
    Pat: A balero, that’s great! (beat) What’s a balero?
  • Pun-Based Title: On the (mostly-British) expression “bloomin’”, and literally blooming flowers.
