Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E52 "Shush Hour"

Go To

Gretel has to do a hero report for school, and she decides to do hers about her superhero self. Since she has procrastinated, Kevin takes her to the library so she can find cited sources for her report; however, Kevin encounters a librarian who wants to shush the whole city using a device called the Shushinator.

Tropes:

  • Kazoos Mean Silliness: Kevin wanted to attend a Kazoo Festival with Fred and Anthony. The librarian absolutely despises the Kazoo Festival, and after Kevin, that becomes the Shushinator's next target.
  • Recycled Premise: The Shushinator's plot to use a device to steal people's voices was used by another noise-hating rogue librarian in an episode of Johnny Test.
    • The scheme also sounds like something the mentally-unsound sound genius Shriek would dream up. Appropriate, as special guest villain voice Cree Summer voiced a recurring character on the show.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: Gretel procrastinating for a whole week so she has done nothing with only one day left is what causes Kevin to force Gretel to the library.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The episode ends on Gretel doing her hero report on Kevin instead of herself. However, since Kevin wasn't one of the approved subjects and she still didn't cite any sources, Gretel gets a C anyway, which she's satisfied with.
Gretel: Fair enough. He's still my hero.
  • Shout-Out: The librarian's Shushinator was actually purchased from Dr. Doofenshmirtz via the Evil Shopping Network.
  • The Speechless: Kevin, and many, many others, become this after their voices get stolen by the Shushinator.
  • Stage Whisper: The librarian consistently talks in a hushed tone similar to this, due to her dislike of loud noises. Except when she sings.
  • Villain Song: Despite her desire for peace and quiet, the librarian can't help herself but to sing a jazzy number called "Give Me Your Voice".
  • Wire Dilemma: The Shushinator interrupts one of these, when a policewoman gets her voice stolen while trying to help a caller. Turns out the caller was her husband, who wanted help fixing their egg timer (and who is later told to stop calling her at work).
