Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E53 "I Was a Teenage Mad Scientist"

Go To

Professor Exclamation has returned to town in order to locate Unbendium, an elusive mineral he needs for his plan to destroy Hamster and Gretel. He discovers that there's Unbendium right underneath the Eastside High School, right when there's a reunion going on, so he attends, much to his chagrin.

Tropes:

  • Cartoon Juggling: Exclamation used to be a gifted master of juggling in the Shower style; he did it all the time at school with any given object, earning him the nickname of Jugglin' Jack.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The metal Exclamation is searching for is right under his old high school, and it just happens to be the 25th class reunion of his class. He lampshades that such a contrived and embarrassing scenario could only be conceived by an idiot writer, or maybe two... just as the "Written By" credits appear on screen.
  • Have We Met?: Kevin, who is the greeter at the high school reunion, sees Professor Exclamation out of costume and seems to vaguely recognize him, just as Exclamation vaguely recognizes him as well. They both brush it off, and only realize it who each other is when Gretel arrives.
  • I Hate Past Me: Exclamation hates everything about his past self, when he was just a nice and laidback juggling boy named Jack Ampersand. What doesn't help is that he was Loved by All, including his old metal shop classmate, Dave.
  • Irony: The school's new unbreakable trophy display case ends up aiding Kevin's rocket in destroying the trophies as it flies in just as the principal is closing it, causing it to contually ricochet off the protective casing inside and shatter everything.
  • Photo Doodle Recognition: Hamster sees Professor Exclamation's yearbook photo and immediately recognizes him. He then draws an exclamation hat and angry eyebrows to confirm it.
  • Sequel Hook: The episode ends with Professor Exclamation, escaping the city in his drill vehicle, with the Unbendium in tow. He claims he needs one more item in order to exact his revenge, as he's seen heading to Las Vegas.
  • Work Off the Debt: Kevin is forced to volunteer as the reunion doorkeeper after a science project of his (a rocket) flies into the school's unbreakable trophy display case and proceeds to destroy every single achievement inside.
