Recap / HTF Three Courses Of Death

Go To

  • Brick Joke: When the episode first shows Buddhist Monkey's house, Panda Mom is seen rummaging through his garbage for food for her and her baby, finding only a fish skeleton. After the credits she's shown cooking said skeleton when the claw from the boiled crab monster suddenly washes up next to her, to her delight.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Char Sui and his giant crab are boiled alive when Buddhist Monkey uses his new-found pyrokinetic powers to boil the water in the lake they're in.
  • Dead Person Conversation: A non-verbal example. When Buddhist Monkey is thrown out of his house by Char Sui's giant crab and lying seemingly defeated on the shore of a lake, a vision of his old mentor Sensei Orangutan appears and shows off his pyrokinesis, making Buddhist Monkey realise that he needs to use the same power to defeat his enemy.
  • Evil Overlord: The Dark Shadow Lord, a mysterious figure sitting on a throne, almost completely hidden other than his huge claws and red eyes. When a single ninja returns alive from the failed mission to kill Buddhist Monkey, he kills that ninja with a pressure point technique and then sends out his minion Char Sui to finish the job.
  • Fiery Stoic: Sensei Orangutan is a wise Old Master who can make fire hot enough to make a teapot boil over just by rubbing his fingertips together, without even bothering to get up from his resting position.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: Char Sui has one that is somehow (presumably magically) stored in his hat. When he's blasted back by the bombs Buddhist Monkey threw at him, the crab emerges to start fighting for him while Char Sui remains hanging beneath it.
  • Grenade Hot Potato: When Char Sui starts throwing dumpling-shaped bombs at Buddhist Monkey, he responds by catching some of the bombs in an umbrella and throwing them back at Char Sui.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: When Char Sui first attacks Buddhist Monkey, he uses a pair of clawed arms ripped off from some unknown animal as weapons.
  • Match Cut: A shot of a cracked cup Buddhist Monkey pours tea into transitions to a shot of that same cup when it was still intact, starting a flashback to when he was a student under Sensei Orangutan.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: To Game of Death.
  • Shadow Walker: Char Sui arrives to challenge Buddhist Monkey by way of emerging from the shadow under a basket in Buddhist Monkey's house.
  • The Stinger: After the end credits, the now-cooked giant crab Char Sui summoned washes up next to the Panda Mom who was digging through Buddhist Monkey's trash, giving a proper meal for her and her baby.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Buddhist Monkey and Panda Mom survive.
  • Touch of Death: The Dark Shadow Lord uses the Pressure Point variation of this. He touches the only minion who came back alive after a failed mission three times on the face in quick succession, causing the minion's eyes to burst from its sockets and his body to be disintegrated in a wave of lightning.
  • You Have Failed Me: The Dark Shadow Lord uses pressure points to kill the only ninja that came back alive from their failed mission to kill Buddhist Monkey.
