Hank has some questions about an old case.

The beast was simply the Call of the Wild personified... which some natures hear to their own destruction.

Hank gets cold feet as a man he arrested years ago is due to be executed. Hank had no doubts of the man's guilt at the time, but his recent experiences have made him wonder. As he and Nick investigate, the suspect's story makes more and more sense. But can they find an explanation for a justice system that doesn't know about Wesen?

Renard persuades Juliette to take action regarding their mutual obsession.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: One of Nick's ancestors suspected Jeffery Dahmer of being a wendigo.
  • Dramatic Irony: The audience know that Renard is going to Nick's friend to treat his obsession with Nick's girlfriend, but it's a big surprise for all concerned.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: A man Hank arrested years ago, who is about to be executed for murder, was actually just defending himself against two Wesen who were trying to eat him. After establishing that this is the case, Nick and Hank are under serious time pressure to find an explanation the DA will accept.
  • Internal Reveal: Monroe finds out that Renard and Juliette are connected. Specifically, at the lips.
  • Oh, Crap!: Nick and Hank realise the victim from Hank's old case was a Wendigo, which means he'll have buried his victims under his house. If they can find that pit, they can prove the guy about to be executed for the murder was acting in self-defence. They go to the house, only to find it's now a supermarket and any victims are buried under tonnes of concrete.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title is obviously a reference to The Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man."
    • The episode ends with Monroe reacting to an unexpected situation with a strained, "Oh boy!" He even says it with the same inflection as Scott Bakula.
  • Wendigo: The Monster of the Week. In this version, they keep literal grave pits of their previous victims' remains under their house.
  • Wham Shot: When Renard takes Juliette to the Spice Shop to treat their obsession with each other, Monroe walks in on them kissing.
    Monroe: Oh boy!
  • What You Are in the Dark: Nick and Hank have no professional obligation to investigate the case, which was closed years ago, and in fact they get a grilling from the DA over it. They investigate purely because Hank wants to be sure.
