Girls In Bikinis, Boys Doin' the Twist

Spring break is coming up. Rory and Paris stage their first political protest and are so excited to get Burmese prisoners set free that they agree to get the guilty ones out as well. They decide to go to Florida with Janet and Glenn after deciding the Connecticut spring that year is the coldest winter in the history of winters. They run into Madeline and Louise, who call Dean on Rory's phone forcing her to leave a message, and learn that Paris is dating a professor who isn't rich.

Tropes

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Is it raining, a girl asks Rory and Paris who just ran in with wet hair. Paris tells them to get their tubes tied.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Lorelai claims Kirk can't be angry with them forever because he doesn't have the ability to concentrate.
  • Blatant Lies: Paris claims they're sharing the two-bed hotel room with four other girls.
  • Brick Joke: When she leaves for Florida, Lorelai tells Rory not to fall out of any windows. Though Rory predicts that she won't drink, when she ends up drunk, she instructs her company to keep her away from windows.
  • Captain Obvious: Louise psychically predicts that two married nineteen-year-olds won't make it.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Lorelai and Rory do their traditional this trope-conversation before Rory leaves for Florida when Lorelai laments that it's always good kids like Rory who have one sip of Kahlua and go dancing off the roof and Rory pretends to take it to mean that Lorelai regrets not teaching her to drink, which Lorelai goes right along with.
      Lorelai: Yes, that's exactly it!
    • Rory describes foam pugil sticks as "giant q-tips" on the phone with Lorelai, leading Lorelai to assume Rory has taken something stronger than alcohol.
    • A voice declares over speakers that the banana eating contest is about to start, and Paris decides to participate to get some real food.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Paris, who doesn't feel safe in a car she's not driving.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even "that German cannibal" turned Glenn down.
  • Gold Digger: Paris averts this by dating an older man who isn't rich, baffling Madeline and Louise.
  • Insistent Terminology: Luke doesn't want to be called an investor just because he loaned Lorelai money for the inn.
  • Les Yay: In-Universe, how Madeline and Louise get guys to buy them drinks though they're underage. Paris gives it a go, but Rory isn't down.
  • Never My Fault: Paris accuses Rory of not stopping her from tipping the table, as she rooms with her and should have predicted that she would have jumped up just then.
  • Not a Morning Person: Subverted with Lorelai. When Jason tries to wake her she bites him, but when she wakes up on her own later she is cheery.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What happened to Glenn?
  • Shout-Out:
    • Rory and Paris think Connecticut is the kind of cold you read about in a Charles Dickens novel.
    • At the beach, Rory is reading The Price of Loyalty: George W. Bush, the White House, and the Education of Paul O'Neill by Ron Suskind and Monsieur Proust by Céleste Albaret.
    • The beach is loud when there's a band reenacting Top Gun at the back.
    • Rory and Paris want to spend their vacation in Miami watching Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers in The Power Of Myth in their hotel room.
    • Lorelai vows never to tell Shirley MacLaine about him spending time in jail.
  • Verbal Backspace: Rory and Paris decide to join the spring break fun, walk outside and turn around, agreeing that "tomorrow is fine".
