The Fundamental Things Apply

Rory comes home to find Lorelai gardening. Paris turns off Rory's alarm because she feels that Janet gets up loudly and early enough. Lorelai is looking for a good interior designer for the Dragonfly, specifically one who doesn't know Emily. No one is sarcastic enough to wish her luck with that.

Rory gets asked out by a guy named Trevor. She initially rejects him, but gets him to ask her out again. Lorelai offers to show Luke movies because he claims never to have watched any. She doesn't quite believe him until the FBI warning comes on and he asks what it is.

Tropes

  • Big Eater:
    • Played with with Lane. Her mother got a good deal on okra, so Lane will order pizza to the Gilmore house and take the slices out of Rory's hands if she has to.
    • As lampshaded by Paris, Rory should not miss breakfast.
  • Blatant Lies: Lorelai claims she was looking for her lipgloss when Emily catches her just hanging out in her car.
  • Captain Obvious:
    • Luke thinks he is this telling Lorelai she should have ordered the Chinese food she plans to eat tomorrow, tomorrow. Subverted since Lorelai doesn't like fresh Chinese food, she prefers stale Chinese food.
    • Played straight immediately after when Lorelai explains to Luke that if an oncoming train is filmed from the front that does not mean it will come out of the screen.
  • Child Hater: Lorelai sarcastically invokes this when she snarks that Emily's ignorance about Sookie's pregnancy makes it look like she hates all child-bearing women.
  • Continuity Snarl: Rory tells her date that she has no siblings, apparently forgetting that she got a sister in the previous season.
  • Cool Horse: Lorelai finally has a grown-up excuse to get a pony. A lady thinks two named Pepper and Gunsmoke are perfect for her.
  • Dark Humor: Lorelai briefly considers throwing a knife at Luke's back to get his attention.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Marty's friends nicknamed Rory "the robe" for lending him a robe.
  • Escalating War: Janet annoys Paris by getting up so early and loudly, so Paris chairs her door shut. Janet climbs out the window and comes back and glues Paris's glue gun shut.
  • Human Notepad: Tana writes math notes on her leg.
  • Hypocrite: Janet thinks Paris is this for calling her obsessive.
  • Improperly Paranoid: Lorelai is convinced Natalie is spying on her for Emily after learning Emily knows Sookie is pregnant.
  • Mind Screw: Luke reasonably argues that since Lorelai asked him to bring burgers, she didn't have to order Chinese food. Lorelai replies that she means to eat the burgers now and the Chinese food later in the week. Luke points out that then she could have ordered the food fresh later in the week. Lorelai replies that she prefers stale Chinese food to fresh Chinese food. At this point Luke gives up.
  • Minor Flaw, Major Breakup:
    • Rory won't date a guy who hydrates.
    • Lorelai wants to fire Natalie for knowing Emily.
  • Never My Fault: Paris turned off Rory's alarm, but doesn't want Rory blaming her for that.
  • Product Placement:
    • Colgate, the name Jackson wants to give his and Sookie's baby if it's a girl.
    • Tony Rosa's steakhouse, the only place Luke would have gone on a date if he dated.
  • Rules Lawyer:
    • Lorelai uses Luke's diner's cell phone policy to her advantage.
      • When Luke tells her to go outside to talk on the phone, she moves so slowly that the call is over before she makes it outside.
      • When Emily calls, Lorelai uses the excuse that she's at the diner that has an anti-cellphone policy to end it quickly.
    • Lorelai doesn't follow her own movie night rules though.
  • Running Joke: Lorelai using Luke's diner as her c/o, having him take messages for her and ordering packages to his address.
  • Secret Test: Jackson suggested a ridiculous name for a daughter. Sookie thinks it's to see if she would let him, thus letting on that it's a boy, so she argues for the sake of keeping him from that knowledge, without considering that arguing about it might be interpreted as it being a girl.
  • Self-Deprecation: Rory thinks she's the one who brings the conversation to a crashing halt every time Trevor tries to start one.
  • Shout-Out:
  • You Just Told Me: Emily makes up that Natalie told her something she didn't, tricking Lorelai into claiming that that wasn't their agreement.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: The draft Rory makes up to switch to the other side of the table bothers Trevor.
