Recap / Get Fit with Brittas S1E4: Gordon Works It Out

Go To

Mr. Brittas: Do you like these sessions then?
Lesley Joseph: Up until now, yes.
Gordon Brittas asking an annoyed Lesley Joseph if she enjoys the workout sessions.

  • Date First Aired: 08/08/1997

Brittas is in a charity shop trying to locate some tapes to get some tips for keeping himself fit. Just then, he is approached by Lesley Joseph (best known for playing Dorien Green on Birds of a Feather) who flirts with him and invites him to a workout session later on. As he is walking home, Brittas discusses the importance of exercise and how you should do a decent amount of it.

As he is perusing these tapes, he is contacted by then Radio Times doctor Mark Porter, who notes that all of the exercise tapes say the same thing, to exercise more. Later, at the supermarket, he comes across Julie. He proceeds to tell her that it is important to do moderate exercise. She ends up using him as a human exercise step.

At Joseph's workout class, Brittas discusses that dance classes and aerobics are good, just as long as you have a good teacher. He flirts with her and he ends up being kneed in the groin. Afterward, Brittas discusses a teenager called James, who was inspired by his role model to take up fencing and went up to a career in music because of this.

As Brittas returns to the charity shop, he explains that the secret to workout is that there is none. Instead, you should keep active.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Actor Allusion: Lesley is quite flirtatious in this episode, a likely reference to her biggest role in Dorien Green.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Brittas affectionately calls Lesley Joseph "Joe".
  • An Aesop: If one wants to keep themselves fit, they need to perform moderate exercise.
  • As Herself: Lesley Joseph.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Brittas frequently addresses the audience to give exercise tips.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The title refers both to Brittas physically working out during the short and to the fact that he figures out that the key to keeping yourself healthy is to perform moderate exercise.
  • Exact Words: Brittas mentions seeing Lesley Joseph on a show with the women, a wording which applies to Birds of a Feather but which also refers to the show he concluded she came from, Tenko.
  • Groin Attack: Brittas is kicked in the nuts by Lesley Joseph for being an annoying twat.
  • Human Doorstop: Julie, taking Brittas' advice on doing moderate exercise, uses the opportunity to use him as a human exercise step.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Brittas' flirtatious behavior towards Lesley Joseph is not a character trait ever seen in the main show. Doubly so considering the fact that Joseph isn't his wife.
  • Recognition Failure: Brittas never figures out that the woman manning the charity shop that he's talking to is a big-name actress known for the then-popular Birds of a Feather. Granted, he seems to figure it out, only for him to conclude that he saw her off Tenko (which she never appeared in) instead.
  • Ship Tease: Brittas is quite flirty with Lesley Joseph.
  • Shout-Out: Brittas mentions having seen Lesley Joseph on that show with the women where she played the good-looking one. The show in mention is Birds of a Feather, where Lesley played notorious maneater Dorien Green. After leaving the charity shop, he eventually realizes where he saw Joseph before... on Tenko.
  • Show Within a Show: The fitness tapes that Brittas purchases, which include Get Fit with Pavarotti, Richard Baker's Classic Jerks, Pick A Buttock Up with Julian Clary, and Princess Di's Kiss Kiss Goodbye to Cellulite.
  • Special Guest: Lesley Joseph, who Brittas flirts with and gets Groin Attacked by.
  • The Television Talks Back: Brittas converses with Radio Times doctor Mark Porter whilst he's on TV.
  • Workout Fanservice: At separate points, Julie and Brittas are seen working out with very revealing outfits.
