Recap / Friends S 9 E 2 The One Where Emma Cries

Go To

Rachel, Monica and Phoebe try to get Emma to stop crying. Things are strained between Ross and Joey, so Joey tries to make it up to Ross by telling him to punch him in the face, but Ross gets hurt instead. Chandler falls asleep during a meeting and wakes up to learn he's getting transferred to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tropes:

  • Air Quotes: Joey doesn't understand that air quotes are used with sarcastic intent and instead uses them when he is trying to earnestly apologize to Ross.
  • Brick Joke: During the end credits, Joey again stresses to Ross that it's just a natural instinct to duck when a fist comes at a person. Chandler walks in and asks what they're talking about, so Joey aims to prove his point by taking a swing at him. Chandler immediately dodges, leading to Joey accidentally punching Ross in the face again.
  • Deadly Dodging: Done unintentionally when Ross accidentally punches a lamppost after being goaded by Joey to hit him. Joey apologizes and states that he merely dodged reflexively, even taking a swing at Ross to demonstrate (who doesn't dodge). At the end of the episode Joey, again trying to demonstrate how people dodge reflexively, throws a punch at Chandler, who dodges... meaning Joey hits Ross again.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Rachel suggests that Joey not be around before Ross returns to the apartment. Joey says he thought he shouldn't be there either, and that Chandler convinced him to come.
  • Getting the Baby to Sleep: The girls' plotline involves them trying to get Emma back to sleep after Rachel wakes her up from a nap. The only thing that works is Monica bouncing her around and chanting a little song.
Monica: I can't believe it! She's asleep! I got her to go to sleep! I have actual magical powers!
  • Hit Me, Dammit!: Joey tries to get Ross to punch him as compensation for his Accidental Proposal to Rachel. However when he finally annoys Ross into doing it, Joey ducks (he claims it was reflex) and Ross punches a column instead, breaking his thumb.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: After several hours of crying Rachel starts referring to Emma as "it".
Monica: "She", Rach, not "it", "she".
Rachel: Yeah, I'm not so sure.
  • I Warned You: Phoebe cautioned Rachel that you should never wake a sleeping baby and is ignored. When Emma starts crying like crazy, Phoebe remarks she'd say something like this but feels Emma herself is covering that.
  • No Sympathy: After Ross injures himself punching the column, Gunther smiles as widely as possible.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Chandler can't fall asleep the night before an important meeting because he's nervous about it, so he dozes off at said meeting. It causes him to miss the vital information that he's getting transferred and thus he can't object to it.
  • Stepping Out to React: The girls have been taking care of Emma and are finding it very harrowing. Emma has been crying for hours. Once Monica has quieted her down a bit Rachel leaves to take a bathroom break and Phoebe leaves to "scream into a pillow."
