Recap / Friends S 9 E 11 The One Where Rachel Goes Back To Work

Go To

Chandler is reluctant to have a baby with Monica now that he's unemployed; meanwhile, he considers a career in advertising. Rachel goes back to work but finds her job was taken by a new guy, Gavin Mitchell. Phoebe is short on cash, so Joey gets her work as an extra in Days of Our Lives.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: After nine years of nobody knowing what it is Chandler does for a living, and five years after not knowing cost Monica her apartment she finally gets his job title correct.
Monica: No, I want you to have a job that you love. Not statistical analysis and data reconfiguration.
Chandler: I quit and you learn what I do?
  • Department of Redundancy Department: One of Chandler's potential slogans is "Phones: Bringing you closer to people who have phones."
  • Fake Orgasm: Gender-flipped. Chandler admits that he faked "that thing that I have to do to make a baby."
Monica: Guys can fake it? Unbelievable! The one thing that's ours!
  • My Biological Clock Is Ticking: Monica wants to have babies with Chandler right away. There's a Running Gag of her coming on to Chandler as soon as she enters the room, only to find that Ross is in there too.
  • Narrative Profanity Filter: The director has some choice words for Phoebe's incompetent acting work. Joey communicates it to Phoebe thusly:
Joey: He can be a little rough around the edges, so I'm gonna replace a word he used a lot, with the word "puppy." Okay, so he said: "If your puppy friend doesn't get her puppy act together, I’m gonna fire her mother-puppy ass".
  • Never Lend to a Friend: Phoebe refuses Joey's offer to lend her money when she's broke, saying that she learned never to borrow money from friends after she apparently borrowed from Richard Dreyfuss.
  • Our Slogan Is Terrible: Chandler thinks he has good sense for coming up with catchy slogans. Evidence demonstrates otherwise.
Chandler: Cheese; it's milk that you chew.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Rachel and Ross tape a pink bow to Emma's head to get people to stop confusing her for a boy. When Gavin asks why they put a pink bow on a boy, Ross has to hold Rachel back.
  • Really Gets Around: Joey has slept with many of the extras in Days of Our Lives. When Phoebe decides her character once slept with Dr. Ramoray and he never called back, two extras in the restaurant scene complain that he never called them either.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Phoebe's role as a background extra quickly goes to her head.
  • You Look Familiar: In-Universe as Phoebe plays a nurse in one scene and a waitress later in the same show. She voices her confusion at her "character"'s changing jobs to Joey, who handwaves it as moonlighting.
