Recap / Friends S 7 E 1 The One With Monicas Thunder

Go To

The gang celebrates Monica and Chandler's engagement. Rachel is a little jealous and makes out with Ross to make herself feel better. Monica sees it and argues with Rachel over stealing her thunder once again. Meanwhile, Phoebe tries to convince Monica and Chandler to let her sing at their wedding, Chandler has trouble performing in bed and Joey rehearses for an audition for a commercial where he plays a 19-year-old.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Phoebe threatens to "pound on" Monica and Chandler for touching her guitar.
  • Bottle Episode: The episode takes place mainly in Monica's apartment with some scenes in Joey's, as the gang gears up to celebrate the engagement at the Plaza.
  • Dawson Casting: In-Universe. Joey, who's 31, has an audition for a commercial where he plays a 19-year-old. His attempts at rehearsing are cringe-inducing to Chandler, who says he does not have what it takes to play that age.
  • It's All About Me:
    • When the gang are toasting them, Monica keeps saying "my night" instead of "our night". Chandler understands what it means to her and dedicates the toast to her.
    • Monica catches Rachel and Ross kissing and gets upset because they are taking attention away from her engagement, according to her. It's a little unreasonable since they weren't exactly showing off to everybody.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Chandler suddenly has trouble getting it up in bed with Monica.
Chandler: It's like biology. Which is funny, because in high school I failed biology and tonight biology failed me.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When explaining why she feels depressed about the engagement, Rachel likens it to how Monica slept with Chandler when Ross was getting married to Emily.
  • Sex with the Ex: Rachel tries to intiate a "Bonus Night" with Ross to try and make herself feel better about the fact that Monica is now engaged while Rachel is still single.
  • Totally Radical: Joey tries too hard to sound 19.
Joey: So, you're playing a little Playstation, huh? That's whack. Playstation is whack. 'Sup with the whack Playstation, 'sup? Huh? Come on, am I nineteen or what?
Chandler: Yes, On a Scale from One to Ten, ten being the dumbest a person can look, you are definitely nineteen.
  • Trauma Button: When arguing about her stolen thunder, Monica accuses Rachel of being jealous of a Formerly Fat friend getting married before she does. This turns out to be not far off from the truth, as Rachel isn't outright jealous, but she is depressed over how Chandler and Monica's engagement makes her think about she's not even close to getting married herself.
