Recap / Friends S 5 E 6 The One With The Yeti

Go To

Ross moves out of his apartment to live with Emily. Monica and Rachel meet a scary man while rummaging through the basement; he turns out to be a new neighbor, Danny. Phoebe is horrified to inherit a mink coat from her grandmother.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: After Ross chews them out, Joey admits he feels somewhat responsible for this fight, to which Chandler tells him he's completely responsible for this because he couldn't keep his mouth shut. Joey quips that he's keeping so many secrets lately that something was bound to slip out, all while glaring at Chandler and Monica. Since Phoebe is there and not in the know, Chandler immediately commends Joey for his bravery in being honest with Ross.
  • Beautiful All Along: The "yeti" that Monica and Rachel met turns out to be quite handsome after cleaning himself up and cutting his hair. Rachel becomes interested in him, although he thinks she's shallow for it.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: In the form of Phoebe pinching Joey whenever he speaks ill of Emily in front of Ross. At one point she pinches him after he's left, which he points out.
  • Blatant Lies: After Ross admits to Emily that Rachel is present, Chandler resorts to this.
    Emily: She's there?!
Chandler: Oh yeah, there-there she is!
  • Brick Joke: As Emily wants Ross to sell any belongings that Rachel came in contact with, Gunther offers to buy all of it. After splitting up with Emily for good, Ross asks the others to help him get his stuff back from Gunther.
  • The Bus Came Back: The gang see Ugly Naked Guy for the first time in a while. They all point out how long it's been since they saw him last.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Emily demands that Ross get rid of all his furniture and move to a new apartment to be free of "Rachel cooties" (as Joey puts it). Her call at the end of the episode is clearly an attempt to check on whether Ross is still hanging around Rachel. Eventually she admits that she can't trust him anymore, forcing them both to admit that their relationship is over.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Joey sees Chandler and Monica making out, he says "None of that while you're under my roof!" and sounds like a Boyfriend-Blocking Dad.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • While the others agree that Emily is being unreasonable and controlling, Joey is the one most resistant to all this and eager to express his views.
    • Joey again in regards to Chandler and Monica's Secret Relationship. He agreed to pretend nothing was going on, but he reasons that's a two-way street and that they can't just be openly making out in the middle of his apartment.
  • Group Hug: At the end they have one to comfort Ross over divorcing Emily.
  • Jerkass to One: Gunther forbids Ross (and only him) from hanging up flyers due to his jealousy.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: In the previous episode, Emily simply demanded that Ross no longer see Rachel, which some have argued wasn't entirely unreasonable all things considered (e.g. their past relationship, Ross saying her name at the wedding, Ross nearly getting on the plane for the honeymoon with her). In this episode, Emily goes full-blown Clingy Jealous Girl by demanding that Ross sell any furniture that Rachel came in contact with, give up his old apartment (filled with such beloved memories as Ben's first steps), and always be under her watchful eye. As Joey reasoned, the situation would've surely escalated to completely cutting off Ross from the rest of the group, as they weren't going to stop seeing Rachel.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Joey's correct use of the word "hence" when describing how Emily is affecting the overall group prompts this reaction from Chandler.
  • Pretty in Mink: Phoebe is morally opposed to owning a coat made of animal fur and so tries to cremate it. She changes her tune after trying it on and seeing she looks good in it.
  • Put on a Bus: Emily makes her final in-person appearance (albeit via phone call).
  • Secret Relationship: When Chandler gives Joey a hard time for talking to Ross, Joey indicates that he's so busy keeping Chandler and Monica's secret that "something was bound to slip out". Chandler and Monica immediately back down and start defending him instead.
  • Straw Hypocrite: After lecturing on how awful fur is and despite being a strict vegetarian, Phoebe falls in love with the coat and makes up ridiculous excuses for wearing it. (Eventually, seeing a squirrel makes her feel guilty, and she gives the coat to a random man on the street.)
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Emily calls the group and asks who exactly she's speaking to.
Joey: Well uh, I don't know about who's here, but I can tell you for damn sure who's not here and that's Rachel!!
