Recap / Friends S 5 E 1 The One After Ross Says Rachel

Go To

Ross must deal with the mess he cause after he said Rachel's name during the wedding.

  • Bait-and-Switch: Phoebe greets Chandler and Monica by yelling "You had sex!", making it look like she knows they hooked up. She then clarifies she just means Monica, and not Chandler, and then accepts when Monica denies it.
  • Bathroom Breakout: How Emily runs away during the reception. Rachel mentions doing the same thing at her own wedding to Barry.
  • Big Damn Kiss: At the end of the episode Chandler comes back into Monica's apartment and asks if still being on London time counts. When she agrees they have their first on-screen kiss.
  • Blunt "Yes": At the reception Judy asks Jack if Ross' failed wedding is their fault for being bad parents. Emily's father, who happens to be walking past, immediately answers "Yes".
  • Call-Back: Rachel mentions how she locked herself in the bathroom during her wedding to Barry so she could escape through the window. Cue an Oh, Crap! as she, Ross and Joey realise that's why Emily is currently locked in the bathroom.
Rachel: (seeing the open window) Oh, look at that, same thing.
  • Did You Just Have Sex?: Phoebe knows immediately that Monica had sex in London (and also that Joey ate meat). When Monica claims she didn't have sex Phoebe accepts it and just assumes her pregnancy is throwing her off.
  • Dirty Old Woman: Emily's stepmother hits on Ross - the guy who screwed up her stepdaughter's marriage - in front of her very own husband.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Monica and Chandler catch Joey eating meat after he promised Phoebe he wouldn't until she had the babies, Joey points out they're in a different country so him eating meat doesn't affect America's meat supply. They admit he has a point, although it's implied this is just because of the "it doesn't count in another country" logic that they were already using to justify continuing to hook up.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Rachel mentions how she locked herself in a room before running out on her own wedding, while Emily is locked in a room. Sure enough, Emily has also fled.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Whenever Chandler and Monica are about to do it, someone walks in on them or begins a pointless discussion that they have trouble breaking away from - *cough* Joey and his existential crisis about being an actor.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Emily's father says this to his wife after she flirts with Ross in front of him.
Mrs. Waltham: Oh yes, there you are.
  • Kiss Diss: Emily does this to Ross when he tries to kiss her at the end of the ceremony. After several awkward seconds he settles for kissing her on the cheek.
Judy: This is worse than when he married the lesbian.
  • Love Makes You Dumb:
Rachel: You're not an idiot. You're just a guy very much in love.
    Ross: Same difference
  • Mile-High Club: Chandler and Monica decide that being over international waters still counts for their "only in London" agreement. Monica heads to the bathroom but before Chandler can join her Joey comes over to talk to him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Both Ross and Rachel have one at the end. He offers her to come with him to Greece on what was supposed to be his honeymoon, but after she boards, he goes back for his jacket. That's when Emily shows up and, having seen him about to board with Rachel, runs off. Ross runs after her. Afterwards, Rachel then realizes Ross has not boarded the plane and it's already pulling back.
  • Runaway Bride: Emily waits until after the ceremony and runs away during the reception. Rachel brings up how she did the same thing.
  • Special Edition Title: Except for the opening and closing shots of the fountain the credits for this episode only uses clips from "The One With Ross' Wedding" two-parter showing the gang in London. It also helps to act as a kind of subtle Previously on….
  • Spoiler Title: The title refers to the ending of the previous episode.
  • Stealing from the Hotel: At one point Rachel runs into Ross' suite with a stack of miniature toiletries in her arms and excitedly tells everyone there's an unattended housekeeping cart outside.
  • Stepford Smiler: Emily forces a smile as she walks with Ross as she is incredibly embarrassed.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Chandler and Monica's multiple attempts to be alone together keep going south for various reasons. It's not until they're back stateside that they can make a go of it.
