The One With The Butt S1 E6

Joey gets a job playing Al Pacino's butt in a movie. His friends make fun of him, but when it's time to act, he loses the job because he overthinks it.

Chandler begins a relationship with a woman who turns out to not only be married but also to have a boyfriend. Chandler at first enjoys the commitment-free relationship but breaks up with her once he decides he doesn't want to share her with the other men.

Tropes

  • Body Double: In-Universe, Joey gets a job as Al Pacino's body double for a shower scene.
  • Brain Bleach: Invoked In-Universe: Joey gets a gig as Al Pacino's butt double. He goes into Monica's bathroom to put lotion on his rear end in preparation for the "part". Chandler comes in with the phone in his hand:
Chandler: Where's Joey? His mom's on the phone.
Monica: In the bathroom. I don't think you wanna go in there right now!
Chandler: Oh come on, we're roommates. (enters bathroom, runs out screaming) GAAAAAAH! MY EYES! MY EYES!
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • Everyone says non-committal positive-ish things about Joey's terrible play, except Chandler, who says "Awful play man, woah!". He's too excited about the beautiful girl who just agreed to go out with him to care about lying.
    • Even Phoebe couldn't hide it.
Joey: Wow, an agency left me its card! Maybe they wanna sign me!
Phoebe: Based on this play? ...Based on this play!
  • Creator Cameo: The director of the Al Pacino movie that Joey gets cast in is played by director James Burrows who directed several episodes of the show (but not this one).
  • Damned by Faint Praise: Joey's performance as Sigmund Freud in "Freud! The Musical": (in response to Joey's mock-German accent) "All of your 'w's' were 'v's'."
  • Deleted Role: Estelle, Joey's new agent, was supposed to appear in this episode but her scene was cut. The character eventually made her debut in season 2 and her scene was restored for the DVD extended cut.
  • Footsie Under the Table: Partway through their first date Aurora slips her foot so far up Chandler's leg "you can count the change in my pocket".
  • Neat Freak: Monica freaks out after Rachel attempts to clean the apartment because she did it wrong. She tries to prove she's not that bad by leaving her shoes in the living room overnight, but is so unsettled she can't sleep.
  • Open Relationship Failure: Chandler dates a polyamorist woman named Aurora, who already has a husband and a boyfriend. Chandler accepts being the third guy for a while but when she admits she's started seeing a fourth man he decides it's too much for him and breaks up with her.
Chandler: Oh, so what you're saying is you're not completely fulfilled by Rick, Ethan and myself?
Aurora: No, that's not exactly what I was..
Chandler: Well, y'know, most women would kill for three guys like us.
  • Polyamory: Partway through their first date Aurora admits to Chandler that she's already married and has another boyfriend. Chandler is initially on board with the idea of just being together for the sex but quickly realises he wants more of a relationship. They break up after he learns she's started seeing a fourth guy.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Invoked by Phoebe when the gang are trying to get Chandler to talk to Aurora.
Phoebe: But, you know, you always see these really beautiful women with these really nothing guys... you could be one of those guys.
