Recap / Friends S 10 E 16 The One With Rachels Going Away Party

Go To

Rachel is leaving for Paris soon and the friends throw a going-away party for her. Rachel says a heartfelt goodbye to each of the friends, except Ross, who gets offended as a result. Monica and Chandler are packing their stuff in preparation for moving away and Chandler tries to figure out who owns a pair of handcuffs he found.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: As Ross expresses irritation about not getting a goodbye, he says he's owed at least a hug. Joey immediately gives Ross a Man Hug, but the sentiment isn't appreciated.
  • Berserk Button: The suggestion that Monica used the Kinky Cuffs with Richard infuriates Chandler to no end.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Ross after Rachel leaves without giving him a goodbye.
  • Brick Joke: Ross comes up with the idea to fill Joey's pants with styrofoam and kick him. Joey likes the idea, but they're stopped by Chandler saying they should be packing. The Stinger has Phoebe and Joey following through, with painful consequences for Joey.
  • Casual Kink: Phoebe dismisses the fluffy handcuffs as being "too flimsy" for her tastes and implies that the actual reason Mike didn't attend the party is because she has him chained to a waterpipe.
  • Continuity Nod: Phoebe can be seen nodding at Monica just before she says that Erica's "stomach ache" is actually labor pains. Phoebe being the first to work out what's going on makes sense as she's the only person in the room who's given birth before.
  • Fan Disservice: In-universe, when the idea is floated that the Kinky Cuffs might have been Rachel's, Chandler clearly starts enjoying the image. Monica quickly shuts it down by stating "Joey's bare ass!" which puts the image in his head and quickly kills the mood for him.
    Chandler: Well played.
  • Groin Attack: The Stinger has Phoebe fill Joey's pants with styrofoam and kick him in the nuts (all at his prompting). Turns out the styrofoam isn't very good protection.
  • Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: Rachel agrees not to move to Paris if Joey beats her at flipping a coin. Of course, she's pulling one over on him by making him the loser no matter what he picks.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Rachel and Monica saying their goodbyes soon becomes unintelligible as they cry their eyes out.
  • Innocently Insensitive: As Ross complains about his frustrations over Rachel not giving him a goodbye, Phoebe suggests she was just worn out from the other goodbyes. She, Monica, and Chandler then talk about how intensely emotional their goodbyes were, much to Ross's annoyance.
  • Kinky Cuffs: While cleaning out the guest bedroom Chandler finds a pair of black, fluffy handcuffs in the closet. After confirming that they don't belong to Rachel or Phoebe (who both lived in that room) he does some more digging and finds pictures of Monica's grandmother using them.
Monica: Whoa, Nana liked it rough!
  • Late to the Realization: Subverted. Joey tells Ross and Chandler he lost 57 coin tosses in a row to Rachel, unknowingly describing it as Heads I Win, Tails You Lose. He then has a moment where he appears to realize the trick Rachel pulled on him, but it turns out he's just reacting to forgetting to pick up his dry cleaning.
  • Like Brother and Sister: When Rachel is saying her goodbye to Monica, she says that nobody has ever been more like a sister to her, a sentiment that Monica clearly reciprocates.
  • Noodle Incident: Phoebe promises to visit Rachel in six months, saying by then that the statute of limitations will have run out of by then and she can finally travel internationally again.
  • Not So Above It All: Ross happily joins in on Chandler and Joey goofing around with the moving supplies, even suggesting putting styrofoam down Joey's pants and kicking him.
  • Prone to Tears: Chandler says his talk with Rachel made him cry in a way he hasn't in years. Monica says he literally cried yesterday over something he saw on the news.
Chandler: [sadly] That old woman was being scammed by her mechanic!
  • Suicide as Comedy: Rachel takes Joey out onto the blacony for their goodbye. We don't hear any of it but after Rachel walks away Joey starts to climb onto the railing like he's about to jump.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After both Rachel and Ross left, Phoebe was prepared to take off herself.
Monica: Uh, where do you think you're going?
Phoebe: I thought I was going home to go to bed, but I'm sensing there's something less fun for me to do here.
  • The Unreveal: Joey's is the only goodbye we don't hear. Whatever it was, it left him contemplating jumping off the balcony. He also calls Ross a "lucky bastard" for not having gotten a goodbye.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Ross storms across the hall to vent his frustration over not getting a goodbye, saying what a lousy way it is to leave things between them, given all their history. Rachel responds by going to his apartment and yells at him for being too thick to get that she didn't say goodbye to him because that hurts worse than saying goodbye to the others did.
  • Written-In Absence: Phoebe tells the others that Mike is unable to attend Rachel's going-away party as he is playing at a birthday party in a roller-skating rink. But when Chandler shows her the handcuffs, she jokes about handcuffing Mike to a waterpipe.
