Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 6 E 7 Practicum

Go To

Jessica worries about Evan's future as doctor-president, so when she has to shadow other teachers in a Practicum as part of her studies, she chooses Evan's school to keep a closer eye on him. Eddie has decided on Allen Iverson as his "hero" subject for an essay, sending Louis on a mission to prove that he's just as worthy of that title.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: When Jessica shows up at Evan's cafeteria table to announce her plan to keep a closer eye on him, she immediately remarks on his food choices and the digestive consequences in front of his friends. She later remarks on his bathroom habits in front of his whole class.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Eddie tells his father that he's writing a paper on a personal hero that immigrated to America and built himself up to where he is now. Louis thinks it'll be about him until Eddie states Allen Iverson's name.
  • Failed a Spot Check: When Jessica asks Emery if he's been keeping an eye on Evan, Emery has to remind her that he already graduated middle school a year ago and that she had yelled "BORING!" during the graduation ceremony.
  • Insistent Terminology: Jessica refuses to pronounce Evan's new friend Geoff's name as "Jeff", stating that it should be like how it is spelled, "Gee-off".
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: In the opening, after getting frustrated at Eddie wanting to skip school to get an athlete's autograph, Jessica remarks how Eddie isn't as dedicated to his path as Evan is. Cue Evan walking in wearing a pooka shell necklace and acting far more relaxed than usual due to the influence of a new school friend named Geoff.
  • Irony: Jessica started following Evan around at his school because he thought his peers would be a bad influence. This drives Evan to break into the principal's office to try and muck with Jessica's time card in order to get her out of his hair earlier.
  • Must Make Amends: To apologize to Eddie for missing out on the autograph signing, Louis manages to sneak aboard a bus Iverson is on, getting the autograph but also getting arrested and banned from all future sporting events.
  • My Beloved Smother: Jessica decides to shadow Evan more than any teacher, disapproving of his attempts to socialize and fit in with the eighth-graders.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: Louis buys an Allen Iverson jersey for Eddie as a gift, but it was out of a discount bin and he doesn't realize until Eddie points it out that it's actually mislabeled as "Iversqn". In the end, when Louis sneaks past security to get onto a bus and obtain Iverson's autograph, Iverson's kind enough to sign one of his actual jerseys and give it to Louis for free.
  • Shout-Out: Eddie realizes that his father doesn't actually know about auto repair when he claims the problem is with the Flux Capacitor.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: To prove to Eddie that he should be his hero, Louis offers to give him a lift to get Allen Iverson's autograph, then fakes a car accident and pretends to fix it to show off his talent and reliability. However, he accidentally breaks an important part when messing around under the car hood, and then Eddie realizes Louis knows nothing about auto repair and, as they won't be able to attend the autograph signing, feels betrayed.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Louis eventually admits his insecurity to Eddie, Eddie admits that he sees Louis as more than a hero due to everything he's done over the years.
