Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 5 E 22 No Apology Necessary

Go To

Eddie creates a diplomatic incident while ordering lunch in Taiwan and is catapulted back to America. To cover his mistakes, Jessica agrees to temporary receive a Taiwanese girl. Louis suggests just apologizing, although Jessica tells him that he does this all the time. Meanwhile, Evan offers to babysit Marvin and Honey's daughter Maria.

  • Apologises a Lot: Louis' immediate reaction to Eddie causing an incident during his cultural exchange trip is to admit fault and apologize. This gets on Jessica's nerves, as he tends to apologize for things that aren't his fault, such as other people rudely pushing him out of their way.
  • Big Honking Traffic Jam: Eddie's bus crash somehow leads to half of all of Taipei getting stuck in a major jam.
  • Blatant Lies: Eddie attempts to deflect blame from himself when he causes an international incident and crashes a Taiwanese bus while trying to get a burger by lying that the people in charge of the cultural exchange expressed anti-American sentiments, even stating that he gave a patriotic speech that led to the entire bus chanting "USA!"
  • Book Ends: The episode begins with Louis wondering if they should resume their book tour when Eddie gets home, reminiscing about how long it's been since the last time they took an actual family road trip with a brief flashback of a younger Eddie covering his ears to avoid a family sing-a-long. The episode ends with the family in the car together and Eddie putting on headphones to avoid a sing-a-long.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: While housing exchange student Lei, she practices her oboe in the garage where grandma stays, gets her own room while all the brothers have to cram their beds together, uses up all of the milk to bake the family desserts, and answers a phone call from some reporters that use her statements to paint the Huangs in a negative light. When the Huangs ultimately settle things with a Taiwanese representative and Lei is transferred, they refer to her as a monster and pray for whoever ends up with her next, and Jenny feels no remorse in borrowing $100 from Lei that she'll never return.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Louis and Jessica hear how Emery's doing extra credit to make up for a video project Grandma ruined by describing a moment of intimate passion, they remark how all of their children have been raised well, even Eddie. It then cuts to Eddie teaching his peers how to make fart noises with his hands, right before getting hungry and causing a Big Honking Traffic Jam.
  • The Gloves Come Off: Despite Louis' eagerness to apologize, when a representative of Taiwan isn't satisfied with just Eddie's apology and wants Jessica and Louis to publicly state they're bad parents, Louis threatens to beat the man up. The representative decides to back off at that, and also agrees to send their exchange student elsewhere.
  • Immoral Journalist: To try and repair international relations after Eddie's incident, the Huangs take in a Taiwanese exchange student named Lei, who's younger than Evan and fond of baking cakes. When Taiwanese reporters call the house for a scoop and she answers, they spin it as the Huangs using her for child labor.
  • Mama Bear: Despite how obvious Eddie's falsehood is, Jessica defends him as long as she can, as the alternative is forcing him to deal with the severe international consequences and she wants to protect him.
  • Never My Fault: Aside from this being Jessica's standard response to problems, Evan quickly yells at Maria (an infant) for being disruptive, and even threatens to spank her. When Evan's parents tell him he's being too harsh, he claims he's following Eddie's example and standing up for himself. Even when Evan later has a tantrum over the attention Lei's getting that leads to an epiphany, it's only to forgive the baby (potentially) acting out over her upcoming younger sibling, and nothing to do with apologizing for his own actions.
  • The Scapegoat: Jessica, frustrated with Louis' eagerness to please and apologize, tells him that she was originally the same way. However, when she apologized for a disruptive student at a teaching job, the parents of said student used it to get her fired, which is why she now has a Never My Fault attitude.
  • Spy Cam: Marvin and Honey put one in a teddy bear to oversee their daughter, which is how they learn about Evan threatening her for being disruptive.
  • This Is Going to Be Huge: In the opening, Eddie sends his family an email from an internet cafe, and Louis believes they'll one day be so popular that "there will be two for every Blockbuster".
