- Bait-and-Switch: At the start of the episode, Frasier and Niles are on a double-date with Daphne and another girl. When their car breaks down, Frasier asks Daphne to look in the back for a repair kit...because he keeps an emergency cell phone behind it and plans to call for a tow.
- Hypocritical Humor: At the end of the episode, Frasier and Niles are musing over how they tried to stay in the auto repair class despite not enjoying it and not being good at it, just to keep Daphne and Martin from being disappointed. They decide to be more honest in the future...and then it's revealed they're printing out fake diplomas.
- I Have Brothers: Daphne offers to take a look at the engine in Frasier's car, claiming that her numerous brothers mean she spent a lot of time around engines.
- Infant Sibling Jealousy: Eddie becomes more passive when Martin takes an interest in Roz's new dog, only willing to play with Martin again when Roz takes "Ariel" home.
- Manly Men Can Hunt: One of the main reasons why Frasier decides to take the automobile repair class is how, when his car broke down, his date thought less of him (and then Daphne adds she thought even less when he cried at the opera). After he and Niles attend their first class, Daphne immediately gushes over how attractive some mechanical know-how is, while Martin decides to pass down a toolkit to Frasier as a Rite of Passage.
- Rebellious Spirit: Realizing they've accidentally become remedial students, and after Roz suggests they just try "coasting" to avoid letting Daphne or Martin down, Frasier and Niles become the class clowns. However, this behavior leads to them being kicked out.
- Teacher's Pet: Frasier and Niles initially behave this way when they attend an automobile repair class, but not only do they get too distracted reading ahead in manuals to pay attention to the lectures, the teacher gets annoyed by them getting hung up on semantics.
