Recap / Frasier S 01 E 17 A Mid Winter Nights Dream

Go To

Niles has Daphne over at his house on a rainy night when Maris is out of town. How will this affect them?

Examples

  • Flipping the Bird: Implied with this line when Frasier leaves his car (and Martin within it) to run through the rain to get to Niles' mansion to stop him from potentially cheating on Maris.
Martin: You'll make better time if you take the shortcut by the side of the fountain! (He gives an offended look.) Well same to you!
  • Get Out!: An offscreen example where Maris throws Niles out of their mansion when finding him naked in the linen closet with the maid.
  • Heel Realization: Niles cannot bring himself to cheat on Maris and reel Daphne in when she goes through a break-up.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Frasier believes that Niles is jealous for Daphne due to problems with Maris, Niles indignantly gets on his case for being overly suspicious before making an angry remark about Eric when spying on him and Daphne.
  • It Was a Dark and Stormy Night: One of the scene transition title cards uses this word for word, when a terrible thunder storm has hit Seattle.
  • Kinky Role-Playing:
    • On Frasier's advice, Niles tries out sexual roleplay to spice things up again with Maris. Unfortunately for him, the way he sets it up (leaving a "treasure map" for Maris and waiting naked in a closet for her to find him) backfires on him (see Not What It Looks Like) and ends with Maris throwing him out of the house.
    • While giving Frasier advice, Roz mentions how she tried the "go to a bar and pretend to be strangers" roleplay with one of her boyfriends. It worked well the first time, but when they tried to repeat it the boyfriend ended up taking another woman home with him.
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: Related to the above title card, a second one appears to let us know, no really, it is.
  • Not So Stoic: After he admits to not being the crying type, Niles (while lying on the couch) happens to overhear Daphne come home from her date with Eric. After he sees her kiss Eric goodnight, he breaks down into tears.
  • Not What It Looks Like:
    • Maris kicks Niles out of the house after finding him (more or less) naked with one of the maids, thanks to Niles's botched attempt at sexual roleplay.
    • During the storm, Frasier makes it up to Niles's house just in time to see Daphne kiss Niles on the cheek while wearing a silk pegnoir, leading him to think that they're going to have an affair.
  • Shout-Out:
    • A line from Frasier references the book Wuthering Heights.
Frasier: My God, it's a recipe for disaster! You've got a vulnerable woman and an unstable man in a gothic mansion on a rainy night! The only thing missing is someone shouting "Heathcliff!" across the moors!
    • Frasier also mentions Pirates of the Caribbean when Niles comes over to reveal his latest fall-out with Maris.
  • The Tag: Frasier, Nile and Daphne are singing and playing on the piano while Martin comes to the mansion in the rain and tries to get their attention, to no avail.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Daphne is upset that Frasier implies that Niles was planning on having an affair with her just after giving a beautiful speech of how much he loves Maris and 'How they laugh at white people.' This is lampshaded afterward.
  • Too Much Information: When Niles tries to explain what happened with Maris, Frasier insists on being able to stop him if the story strays too far into squick territory. He puts this to good use half a minute later when Niles indirectly admits that he was wearing an eyepatch on his penis.
