Recap / Frasier S 01 E 09 Selling Out

Go To

Frasier becomes conflicted over whether he should start doing on-air endorsements of products.

Tropes:

  • Asian Speekee Engrish: Bulldog's idea of doing a radio ad for a Chinese restaurant is to do a supremely offensive accent.
Bulldog: Aww, so you come chop-chop to "Hoo-nan Parace," where Pekin' duck is awrays extla clispy!
Roz: (to Frasier) We're gonna get sued this time, for sure.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Another gag about the arctic conditions of Niles' marriage, when he tells Frasier watching Basic Instinct got Maris so fired up the two of them pushed their beds together.
Niles: And that was no mean feat, as you know her bedroom is across the hall from mine!
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end of the episode, Frasier is sitting glumly watching TV late at night. Martin comes in asking if he's still watching "that commercial" again. Turns out Frasier didn't make the commercial, and is now wondering whether he should've or not. It ends up on a heartwarming note, as Frasier and Martin bond talking about Dr. Joyce Brothers being on The Hollywood Squares.
Martin: I remember her from Hollywood Squares. She was always under Charlie Weaver.
Frasier: No, no. Charlie Weaver was always on the bottom.
Martin: No, I don't think so. Let's see, Paul Lynde was in the middle, George Gobel was under him, and... where was Wally Cox?
Frasier: Wally Cox. Uh, upper left, next to Rose Marie to block.
    Martin: Oh, right...
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • Frasier gives a humorous example regarding the caller, Roger, who wants his advice on what to name his luxury yacht and how indifferent he is to such a petty matter.
Frasier: Roger, at Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the tunneling electron microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe. Roger, if I were using that microscope right now... I still wouldn't be able to locate my interest in your problem. Thank you for your call.
    • And Martin's own judgement after trying to politely brush off Frasier's inquiries about the hot tub.
Frasier: You hated it, didn't you?
Martin: (not even looking at him) Yup. G'night, Frasier.
  • The Cameo: Dr. Joyce Brothers, who did the nut commercial instead of Fras.
  • Education Mama: Gender-inverted. Bebe manages to easily talk Frasier around by hinting college tuition for Frederick, especially at an Ivy League school like Harvard, might just be out of his price range and he'd have to settle for... a State college.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Bebe gets very cold when she catches sight of Daphne in Frasier's apartment. She cheers back up when the matter is clarified.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Niles accuses Frasier of still wearing what he had on the commercial set as a way of getting people to ask about it and say he's in advertising. Frasier points out Niles has a license plate saying "SHRINK" for the exact same reason.
  • Japanese Ranguage: Bulldog's own inimitable touch to advertising. After hearing it Roz tells Frasier they're definitely going to get sued for this.
  • Serious Business: Frasier's ethical viewpoint on giving product placement. As a doctor, he feels that simply giving his opinion on something like a restaurant carries more weight, and doesn't want to influence people's opinions (even though it's established in previous episodes Frasier isn't exactly a big name star at KACL as is).
  • The Stinger: It continues from the scene where Frasier ducked underwater to hide from some fellow psychiatrists while in the demo hot tub. Notable for actually having sound effects still in.
