Recap / For All Mankind S 03 E 08 The Sands Of Ares

Go To

Following the mining disaster, NASA, Roscosmos, and Helios work together to rescue Ed and Danny.

  • Call-Back: Dev mentions that his dad was an aerospace engineer for Kirkland, the contractor responsible for the Apollo 23 accident.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies: Three more spacefarers are killed. Kuznetsov and Mayakovsky are now the only surviving members of the Soviet expedition.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Danny spends the first half of the episode here, believing that rescue won't arrive in time (and implying that he deserves to die for his mistakes). After Ed's wound is accidentally re-opened, Danny snaps out of it, trying to keep Ed alive and hopeful even when the latter is becoming resigned to death.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Nick and Isabella were killed in the rockslide. Alexei is injured and ultimately dies offscreen.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Dev figures out the way to save Ed and Danny. Instead of digging down through the regolith, they instead penetrate the lava tube that the Hab is currently over, then set off an explosion to drain the regolith into the lava tube and thus uncover the Hab.
  • Freudian Excuse: Dev's father had worked for Kirkland but lost his job after the Apollo 23 disaster and was reduced to driving a taxi before dying just as Dev was graduating college. Dev has long talked of his dad as a successful man as "the American people hate to hear about failure." It's obvious much of his drive to get to Mars first is to escape that supposed failed legacy of his father.
  • Hiding Behind the Language Barrier: In the confined space of the Hab, Kuznetsov and Mayakovsky privately discuss the updates by speaking in Russian.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Not a cough per se, but vomiting and a lingering headache, which are spot-on accurate symptoms of cerebral bleeding, which eventually do Alexei in. Like most people afflicted with the likes in fiction, Alexei does not react properly to the life-threatening danger he is in.
  • It's All My Fault: Danny admits to Ed that he was the ringleader when he and Shane were being delinquents, and he let Shane take the fall each time.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Alexei has hit his head, as evidenced by him throwing up when he comes to. It is later revealed that he's suffering from cerebral bleeding. He is seen popping Aspirin, which has the known side-effect of thinning the blood - i.e. making the bleeding worse. Instead of trying to recover, he is engaging in strenuous physical activity, which also can't help. The final blow comes when he's entering through the airlock, which gives him a pressure differential that further exacerbates his symptomsnote
  • Parting-Words Regret: Ed, resigned to death, is upset that his last conversation with Kelly was an argument over how to proceed with the excavation.note  This brings back memories of his relationship with Shane, which was also largely antagonistic towards the end.
  • So You Were Saying...?: Danny is about to confess his affair with Karen to Ed, when an explosion rocks the Hab.
  • Wham Line: Kuznetsov and Mayakovsky reveal that Kelly is pregnant.
