Recap / Final Space S 3 E 13 The Devils Den

Go To

A shattered Team Squad is left reeling as Gary and Avocato travel into Invictus' inner sanctum for the final showdown.

Tropes:

  • And I Must Scream: For his betrayal, Invictus leaves Lord Commander to rot in a cube for eternity. Funnily enough, this mirrors Bolo's imprisonment before he was freed.
  • Back for the Finale: Tribore and Quatronostro step in after their absence from the last three episodes to re-activate the bridge on their end.
  • Because I'm Good At It: Avocato uses only this reason to explain why he killed Little Cato's parents, stating, "I'm a killer. It's what I do."
  • Bookends:
    • The season began with the Team Squad entering Final Space to save Quinn. Now it ends with them escaping the realm, but at a terrible price.
    • Gary and Mooncake got separated from each other at the start of the season. Here, they get separated again, only for good this time.
  • Cliffhanger: Invictus is now free to wreak havoc on every dimension. The episode, and the series, ends before Invictus and the Team Squad can do anything else.
  • Cruel Twist Ending: The Team Squad gets very close to escaping Final Space through the Trans Dimensional Bridge, only for Ash to show up, capture Mooncake, and use him to free Invictus, allowing it to prepare to ravage the universe. This causes the third season and basically the entire series to end on an immensely grim cliffhanger. The only silver linings to this ending are that the Team Squad escaped, cured of their poisoning, and the later confirmation that Mooncake is still alive.
  • Darkest Hour: Thanks to Ash, Invictus is free, and the season, and the series, ends with the crew looking at its true form while it begins to escape the eponymous Final Space.
  • Evil vs. Evil: The Lord Commander returns to try and get back at Invictus, only for it and a now-villainous Ash to put him out of commission with ease.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Ash completes her turn into Invictus' monstrous servant through taking hold of Mooncake and repurposing his powers to let her new master free.
  • Fate Worse than Death: The Lord Commander is ultimately condemned by Invictus to eternity alone in the same sort of giant cubic prison that once housed Bolo.
  • Fingore: This time it's Ash karmically dishing this out to the Lord Commander.
  • History Repeats: Once again, we have a soul-crushing Downer Ending of a finale brought on by someone granted power by Invictus torturously using Mooncake's power to facilitate a victory for it, complete with Gary insisting that Mooncake never did anything to hurt them, as well as the Lord Commander getting dicked over by a clearly far greater threat than him.
  • Internal Reveal: Little Cato finally hears it from Avocato himself that the latter murdered his family, and is naturally devastated to hear it.
  • Irony: After gaining his Titan form, the Lord Commander gave Bolo The Worf Effect, but once he goes against Ash and Invictus he's the one given this treatment. If that wasn't enough he's also imprisoned within a cube just like Bolo.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Replace "I" with "we", and you pretty much have Gary saying this word for word at the very end of the episode when he sees Invictus emerging from Final Space.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In his efforts to keep Ash off the Team Squad's backs, all Mooncake really does is leave himself open for Ash to take his powers and hand Invictus the key it needs to break free.
  • No Ending: The episode ends abruptly with Invictus breaking free and the Team Squad backed into a corner once again with the conflict still ongoing. This extends to the series and overall story too due to outside factors with several plot lines including the new rift between Avocato and Little Cato left completely unresolved.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The crew finally achieves their goal of escaping Final Space and being rid of its residual poisoning, but any sense of triumph is negated by Invictus following suit, on top of Ash betraying them and taking Mooncake and his powers under her thrall as retaliation for Gary and co.'s perceived misdeeds against her, Little Cato and Fox.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: This is how Ash and Little Cato demand Avocato confess his greatest sin himself.
Ash: From your mouth! Tell your son what. You. DID.
    Avocato: I'm sorry...I'm so sorry...
Little Cato: Did! You! DO IT?!
  • Season Finale: This is the last episode of Season 3.
  • Slasher Smile: Ash sports one that would make Invictus proud as she takes Mooncake's powers for herself.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: For all of Ash's venom and misdeeds towards the crew since finding out Avocato's darkest secret, Gary still takes the time to apologize for them having failed her.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Nightfall's recording for Quinn. It even gets lampshaded by KVN.
  • Uncertain Doom: Mooncake and Ash are last shown being used by Invictus to escape from Final Space, leaving their fates very uncertain. For Mooncake however, it is confirmed via Word of God that he is still alive.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Invictus and Ash easily defeat the Lord Commander, then the former is finally freed and escapes Final Space in its true form.
    • The Team Squad also manages to escape Final Space with Gary, Avocato, Little Cato, and Sheryl being cured of their Final Space poisoning upon leaving.
  • Wham Line: Once Ash takes Mooncake's powers, she marks a grim turning point for the remainder of the episode with just eight words:
Ash: The keys is yours, Invictus. You're free now.
  • Wham Shot: Just to really hammer in one last time the sheer enormity of the consequences of the Team Squad's failures across the show to keep the worst case scenario from coming to life, the episode and the season as a whole closes on Invictus having escaped Final Space at full power and stature, with the crew looking microscopic and utterly powerless to stop it in comparison. And worst of all, various real-life factors have made it so that the entire show just ends on this.
Gary: My god...what have we done?
  • The Worf Effect: The Lord Commander, who as a Titan easily cleaved his way through a bunch of other Titans including Bolo, gets taken down without a sweat by Ash to show how insignificant he's become to Invictus. And that's before he's put away forever in a giant cube for his disobedience.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Mooncake does this to prevent Ash from using her powers as a tractor beam against the Galaxy 2, but she exploits this by absorbing his ability to unlock Final Space.
