Recap / Family Guy S 21 E 19 From Russia With Love

Go To

Meg takes Stewie and Brian on a trip to Russia, only to find that she's much happier over there. Meanwhile, Quagmire starts dating a woman who used to bully Lois in junior high.

Tropes:

  • Always Someone Better: Lois is resentful of Stephanie because she's far more successful than she is or ever could be.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Brian, Stewie, and Meg successfully convince Ivan to give Brian's account back. However, they have to go their separate ways when Meg decides to stay in Russia.
  • Brick Joke: The episode begins with the Griffin family watching an ASPCA commercial playing "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung instead of "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. Later, while Lois is transforming into her troubled teenage self, she tries to play some Sarah McLachlan to calm herself down but accidentally plays "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" instead.
  • Colorblind Confusion: Brian is stoked because it seems like his Instagram account has finally been verified thanks to getting a blue check. He changes his tune when Stewie points out that the check is actually green, indicating that he got hacked. Brian then expresses that he's so mad that he's "seeing gray", with Stewie correcting him.
  • Creepy Gym Coach: Peter offhandedly mentions that his gym teacher once drove him home with his pants off in response to Lois's story about being bullied in middle school.
  • Furry Reminder: Brian gets excited at the prospect of riding in the car when he gets an IG Live comment from Chris asking him about such.
  • Good All Along: Turns out, Stephanie wasn't Lois' bully at all and was only trying to help her.
  • Never My Fault: Peter nearly causes accidents twice (once when he runs a red light, and again when he makes an early turn), and when he's honked at, he grumbles at the other drivers to "settle down".
  • Once More, with Clarity: Lois is upset when she finds out that Quagmire's new girlfriend is none other than Stephanie, who used to bully her in junior high. She recounts in a flashback how Stephanie once pushed her into a pool at a pool party after mockingly warning her that her shoes were untied. Later in the episode, after Stephanie reveals that she'd never bullied Lois in the first place, it cuts to that same flashback where Lois falls into the pool. This time, however, Stephanie doesn't push her and she's genuinely warning her that her shoes are untied.
  • The Reveal: It turns out that Stephanie never bullied Lois and that both times where Lois fell into the pool were accidents.
  • Sexiness Score: Part of what spurs Meg's decision to stay in Russia is that she's an "8" there, as opposed to being seen as ugly in America.
  • Vacation Episode: Brian, Stewie, and Meg set off for Russia to get Brian's Instagram account back from a hacker named Ivan. It works, but Meg comes to the realization that she's much happier in Russia than she is back home and decides to stay behind.
