Recap / Family Guy S 20 E 17 All About Alana

Go To

Lois' piano student, Alana, comes to work for the Griffins and turns out to have sinister intentions.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Continuity Nod:
    • As shown in a cutaway gag in "Vestigial Peter", someone else buying groceries is Lois' Berserk Button.
    • In a subtle example, Meg’s drumset is a reference to Season 1’s “Chitty Chitty Death Bang,” in which Meg had her first drum solo.
    • While trying to marry Peter, the now-redhead Alana's hair is even styled in the same way as Lois during her and Peter's wedding.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Alana practices Lois' part of the theme song while in a darkened room.
  • Forgot Flanders Could Do That: In the earlier seasons, Lois originally taught piano lessons to kids as a side job. However, this was dropped and she was portrayed as a bored housewife. This episode brings this up again, with the antagonist being one of her piano students.
  • Grass is Greener: While in prison, Alana sincerely apologizes to Lois and talks about how life on the inside is different than at the house. Lois ends up wanting to switch after learning that inmates are served food rather than expected to make it and take knitting classes.
  • In Medias Res: The episode opens with Peter about to marry Alana. Stewie winds things back a month to explain how they all got to this point.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Alana bears a very close resemblance to Liz Gillies, her voice actress.
  • Lampshade Hanging: While being driven away by the thugs that Alana hired, Lois asks if this had anything to do with "the virtual stranger" she let into her house and get close to her family.
  • Literal Metaphor: Stewie remarking on Alana's twisted path to the alter, to get there she has to go through a loop and several other obstacles.
  • Mistaken for Santa: The Griffins allow one of Lois's piano students named Alana to stay with them. However, Alana secretly wants to replace Lois and goes about winning over the other members of the family. To seduce Peter, she puts on lingerie and surprises him when he goes to the kitchen in the middle of the night. Peter initially assumes she's Santa Claus, with the narration explaining that he assumes that everyone up in the middle of the night must be Santa Claus.
  • Mood Whiplash: Thinking Lois is gone for good, a devastated Peter remarks that she was the one and thus irreplaceable. Meg then asks what's for dinner, leading to Peter to decide to marry Alana.
  • Narrator: Stewie acts as one throughout the episode to explain how all this happened. Chris insists on joining in during the last scene. Mayor Wild West also briefly joined during the scene where Meg and Alana were scissoring.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: When Peter finds Alana in the kitchen in the middle of the night wearing lingerie, she asks him if he sees anything he likes. He replies he does, and has her make him a five-course meal.
  • Parallel Porn Titles: Chris's closing narration notes that he once saw a film called All About Beav that was nothing like this episode.
  • Rewind Gag: After doing some yardwork, Alana asks Lois "Did you guys know you have a pool in the backyard? It was just overgrown with grass and weeds." Cue Peter jumping in and yelling "Cannonbaaaall!". Alana mentions how the pool doesn't have any water in it. Cue the sound of a tape reversing with Peter reverse-cannonballing out of the pool.
Peter: !llaaaabnonnaC Pshew, that was a close one.
  • Shout-Out: While playing fetch with Brian, Lois throws the ball so hard that it lands by the feet of a certain foursome in Arlen, Texas. Mike Judge reprises Hank Hill for this moment.
Hank: Looks like Lois is plenty threatened by that new girl who moved in, I tell you what.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Chris has a creepy obsession over Alana. He would sniff her hair or expose himself naked so she would give him a bath.
  • Take That!: Alana claims she's a huge Kathy Griffin fan. Lois retorts that no one is a huge Kathy Griffin fan.
  • Wham Shot: The episode opens during a wedding ceremony, but the red-haired bride turns out to be Alana.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To All About Eve.
