• Blackmail: Tonya pretends that she broke Julius' chair instead of Drew to exploit him.
• The Dog Bites Back: Drew eventually gets sick of Tonya's ridiculous demands and threatens to tell Rochelle that she lied on him. Doubles as an Awesome Moment.

  Drew: "But you told him you did it. So if you tell him I did it, I'mma tell Mama you lied on me. And you're gonna have to tell her either you lied this time or you lied that time. And either way, you lied. So if I get a beating from him, you'll get a beating from her. So, you gonna tell, or you gonna get up and get that remote?"

• Double Standard: Julius softens up on Tonya when she claims she broke his chair. It's implied that he would've been angry had he known it were actually Drew.
• Downer Ending: Chris fails the exam because he wrote all his answers on the wrong lines.
• Disproportionate Retribution: Ms. Morello fails Chris simply because he wrote all his answers on the wrong lines.
• Education Mama: Rochelle as usual, but up to eleven here. She is extremely harsh and impatient teaching Chris math. Ironically, her mother Maxine is one too but is much more serene and patient in teaching Chris, which is why he eventually gets much better at it.
• Everybody Hates Mathematics: Hence the title. Subverted as Rochelle and Maxine are great at it, and the latter's teaching is what helps Chris become good at it.
• Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job: The crack epidemic of The '80s forces Risky to find legitimate work with Julius. This doesn't stop him from using it as a front to do sell his wares.
• Green-Eyed Monster: Despite what she claims, Rochelle is obviously jealous that Chris is able to learn math much better with her mother than her.
• Serious Business: The pizza party that can be earned if everyone passes their math test. Even Caruso apparently passes (though, knowing him, he probably cheated).
