• Always Someone Better: Downplayed. Jorge was the only person capable of beating Chris' Asteroids score, and loses to him after they compete for the first time, only to beat him after betting money on it, stealing his rep from him. It isn't until the end of the episode that Chris reclaims his spot.
• An Aesop: Addictions are harmful. Rochelle buying her expensive boxes of chocolate turtles makes the family come up short on bills, while Julius continues gambling on the lottery despite calling out Rochelle. Chris also obsessively tries to beat Jorge in Asteroids, costing Greg five dollars and Julius a lottery win.
• Bilingual Bonus: In an Imagine Spot, Jorge asks Rochelle if she can cook mofongo. Rochelle then tells him to just eat the food she cooked in Spanish, to which he complies. She clarifies that she was raised around Puerto Ricans.
• Does This Remind You of Anything?: Rochelle's behavior after being cut off from her turtles is eerily similar to a junkie suffering from withdrawal. She searches around the house for any and all candy she can find, steals Drew and Tonya's candy, flips out between many different moods on Julius when he learns he's still playing the lottery, and mentions having "the shakes at night" without a steady flow of sugar.
• G-Rated Drug: Chocolate turtles are this for Rochelle, especially in this episode, where she actually goes into a crazed sugar withdrawal over not having any more.
• Hypocrite: Julius forces Rochelle to stop buying chocolate turtles when they come up short on bills, yet he still buys lottery tickets. Of course those thing have the potential to help out the family if he won.
• Worthy Opponent: Jorge is this to Chris.
• Yank the Dog's Chain: Chris finally reclaims his rep from Jorge, at the cost of the dollar his father sent him to the store with. Julius actually wins the lottery, but since Chris didn't buy the ticket..
