An adaptation of The Smurfs comic book story version of "King Smurf", which is written as a fictional account of what really happened to the Smurfs during the time Papa Smurf was away, with Brainy's daughter Sophia being its author and having to deal with her fellow Smurfs wanting to know why she was writing this.
This story provides examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: Like the cartoon show adaptation, this one includes Smurfette as part of its storytelling, although her role is less Action Girl and more a Maid Marian-type character.
- Adaptational Heroism: In-universe, Sophia's story about King Smurf makes Brainy a hero (which out-of-universe is what the original version of the story had him as) whereas in the real account that she was basing her story on (which is the cartoon show adaptation) Brainy was King Smurf.
- Blank Book: Sophia tricks her fellow Smurfs into stealing what they think is the original manuscript of her work, only to find out that it was a blank-page duplicate.
- Bring My Brown Pants: When the Smurfs laugh at Anonymous Smurf deciding to call himself Lord Smurf the First, Duncan McSmurf mentions that the whole thing is so funny to him, he almost peed in his kilt.
- Getting the Boot: Older Brainy gets this from his fellow Smurfs near the end of the story.
- Heroic Seductress: Smurfette plays one in this adaptation of the story to Lord Smurf the First.
- Literary Allusion Title: This story's title is based on The Once and Future King.
- Shout-Out: To Braveheart with Duncan McSmurf's Rousing Speech near the end to encourage the rebel Smurfs to press on with the attack.
- Then Let Me Be Evil: As Lord Smurf the First continually suffers the slander of being called "Lord Smurf the Worst" by the rebel Smurfs, he decides to adopt the title "Lord Smurf the Terrible" when the rebels announce an attack on the Smurf Village.
- We Can Rule Together: Lord Smurf the First tempts Smurfette, who is working secretly to destroy his kingdom rule from within, with the promise that she could be his queen and the two could rule over the Smurf Village together.
