Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 3 E 4 The Incredible Shrinking Royals

Go To

As Avalor's new Magister of Trade, Julio hosts his first Feast of Friendship, but things go awry when ancient magic shrinks all of the attendees.

  • Aesop Amnesia: Justified. Esteban is still at it with pulling schemes to sabotage other people's successes so that he can claim the glory for himself, but he's done doing it to Elena and is instead doing it for her since he trusts her now, as he stated in "Naomi Knows Best". After Elena gives him another What the Hell, Hero? after learning he was trying to sabotage Julio's efforts, he comes around again and ends up having more faith in Julio by the end of the episode. It's justified since Esteban is still growing out of his habit and arrogance.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Julio initially invites King Santiago of Paraíso, but Valentina shows up instead. It is explained that her father wanted her to have more diplomatic experience to prepare her for her queenly duties.
    • Abigail and Hector get into an argument about who gets to sit where and it seems that Abigail is about to raise her voice through Punctuated! For! Emphasis!, only to smugly say the last word calmly.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • King Toshi returns for the first time since his debut in "Model Sister".
    • King Hector also returns since his debut in "Royal Retreat".
    • Likewise, Princess Valentina also returns since her debut in "Royal Rivalry".
  • Call-Back:
    • The episode follows up on Julio and Paloma's new positions after the former was elected over the latter in "All Kingdoms Fair".
    • We first saw a Feast of Friendship back in "Masks of Magic", which is said to have taken place over a year before this episode. Julio comes up with the idea to invite the royals instead of their ambassadors/representatives as well as not having the feast at Paloma's emporium this time, in addition to Elena reminding Paloma that she knows of her Rags to Riches background because of the previous feast.
  • Character Development:
    • King Hector goes from being a Manchild to gaining some humility from the situation, complimenting Queen Abigail's dresses and belts for helping them escape the hole.
    • Likewise, Esteban and Paloma come around to Julio after he saves their lives and makes the feast a success.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Hector's model boat is used to carry the shrunken royals out of the cave.
  • Cool Old Lady: Queen Abigail is quite boisterous and isn't afraid to call out Hector for being a Manchild.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Esteban joins in with Doña Paloma in sabotaging Julio's feast because Julio "cut out the middlemen", or, as Esteban puts in his words, "a mini mazapan Chancellor Esteban wasn't invited".
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Julio throws his vest aside while having a Heroic BSoD, which knocks a couple of the marzipan royals into Hector's model boat. After staring at it for a few seconds, he realizes he can give it to the shrunken royals to get them out of the hole through the stream.
  • Foreshadowing: Doña Paloma tells Esteban this will be the first and last time she’s ever a part of his schemes.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: No one is particularly fond of Hector, and Esteban and Paloma only invite him as a Godzilla Threshold against Julio. When Hector finds out that he wasn't actually invited, he actually sounds hurt and starts taking steps to be more decent.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: The shrunken Elena and Paloma climb onto opposite sides of a discouraged Julio's shoulders, with Elena telling him that he's trying his best and none of this is his fault, while Paloma says that it is his fault and none of this would have happened if she were still in charge. Elena and Paloma then get into an argument, with Elena pointing out that the doña is being a hypocrite for not giving Julio a chance to prosper from the same position she was once in.
  • Heel Realization: Upon learning that no one actually wanted him to come to the feast, Hector is hurt and at least becomes a little more decent at the end of the episode, complimenting Queen Abigail's dresses that she brought for the trade negotiation.
  • Hey, You!: Hector never refers to anyone by their actual names or titles, calling Esteban "mustache", Abigail "Queenie", and Julio "blockhead/knucklehead".
  • Hypocrite:
    • Esteban was the one who suggested Julio to run against Paloma in the first place, so he shouldn't be surprised that he wants to run things differently than what Paloma does.
    • Elena calls out Doña Paloma on this for talking down to Julio because he's a commoner, since she told her at the previous feast that she also came from a lesser background and had to work hard to get to where she did.
  • Insistent Terminology: Doña Paloma interprets her new job as "Assistant Magister of Trade" when her job is actually being assistant to the Magister of Trade.
  • Mundanger: With the show's prevalence of evil magical beings as villains, no one expected an angry crawfish to ever be a villain.
  • Never My Fault:
    • After the royals fall into the hole, Hector blames Abigail for hanging onto him when he was hanging on the ledge and that's why he's trapped there. Toshi puts him in his place by pointing out if he hadn't raised his voice like he was warned multiple times, none of them would be in this mess.
    • Esteban and Paloma argue about who was responsible for the scheme, which Elena hears. And as you might expect, she's not happy in the slightest.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Elena points out that both Julio and Doña Paloma were originally commoners, so Paloma has no reason to be as hard on Julio as she is because it would be hypocritical of her.
  • Nothing Personal: Julio makes it clear he’s got nothing against Esteban, cutting out the middle man is merely protocol in his strategy.
  • Revenge: The crawfish seems to want revenge on the humans because they were about to boil him alive.
  • Rivals Team Up: Esteban and Doña Paloma don't really like each other, but agree to put aside their differences because they feel left out. After almost getting killed, Paloma decides this is a one time deal and is not taking part in any of Esteban's schemes again.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Speak of the Devil: Just as Elena and Abigail are talking about how unpleasant Hector is, he shows up at the feast, much to their chagrin.
  • This Is Going to Suck: Elena and Abigail's reaction to Hector being invited to the feast.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It was a really bad idea for Julio to lug the crayfish while going into the temple to see what was wrong, which falls out of his grabber and terrorizes the shrunken guests. Had he just dropped the crayfish before entering the temple, it wouldn’t have been such a threat.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Elena is furious when she learns Esteban and Paloma sabotaged the trade to put down Julio.
