Recap / Dragons The Nine Realms S 1 E 6 Fault Ripper

Go To

The adults begin an expedition into the fissure to stop the earthquakes, only for the Dragon Club to find the true cause behind them.

Tropes:

  • Anger Born of Worry: Jun punches Tom after he celebrates narrowly surviving getting dragged into the fissure by the Fault Ripper along with Thunder.
  • Big Bad: The Fault Ripper is this for this finale.
  • Callback:
Jun: (hits Tom) That's for scaring me to death!
    Tom: But...What about everything else?
  • Cliffhanger: At the end of the episode, Thunder scorches the symbol of the Strike Class into the wall— the same symbol that Tom has seen before of the Viking artifacts passed down his family, raising more questions about Thunder and dragons in general.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: Olivia invokes this by suggesting that the solution to avoid the canyon wall crumbling with them on it is to blow up the origin of the earthquakes. Unfortunately, the origin is not two rock walls grinding against each other, but a large dragon packing more heat than anyone on I.C.A.R.U.S. has combined.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Alex and Feathers are absent for most of the climax because of Alex's fear of heights. As soon as they join the battle, it turns out that Feathers is the best counter for the Fault Ripper, and it goes down in under a minute.
  • Dramatic Ammo Depletion: Thunder runs out of juice right after the Dragon Club gets the upper hand over the Fault Ripper. Plowhorn follows soon after, and it's likely Wu & Wei would have as well before Alex and Feathers showed up.
  • Gray-and-Grey Morality: Tom acknowledges that the Fault Ripper wasn't evil, it was just following its nature, which caused problems for I.C.A.R.U.S. when it drilled underneath their base. After the Dragon Club's victory over it, he hopes it survived the fall.
  • Internal Reveal: The Dragon Club learns that dragons have a limited number of shots thanks to the amount of punishment that the Fault Ripper can take.
  • Parents in Distress: Olivia and Phillip are stuck in the manned probe while the Fault Ripper is tearing the canyon apart, requiring assistance from the kids to avoid falling to their deaths.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: The Fault Ripper is blind and relies on hearing to get around. As a result, Feathers' Super-Scream is the best counter for it after all the other dragons tried and failed to drive it off.
